VirtualBox incompleat after an installation

When Oracle's VirtualBox system is installed with an eopkg it command, the installationn inclludes ONLY support for the LTS modules. Each time, I need to fire up the Software Center in order to get support for the current modules:

If anything, I would think that support for the current kernel should take precedence, but even better would be to provide support for both.

By the way, I just created a Budgie VM after getting the current modules from the Software Center, but without rebooting my host computer. I suspect that rebooting may not be needed.

I am not sure I understand so I will summarize what I think I understood:

You are saying that you are running sudo eopkg it -y virtualbox and it installs the vbox host modules for the LTS kernel and it fails so you run the software center to install virtualbox-current ? Is that right ?

So basically I am guessing you have the current kernel so you should have installed sudo eopkg it vurtualbox-current

The reason you didn't had to reboot is because the usysconf trigger restarts the virtualbox service which does a "modprobe" to reload the virtualbox kernel module.

Sounds plausible. I removed everything for VBox (including in my home directory, and .config) and started over by installing virtualbox-current. Still created a Budgie VM without rebooting, but I'm assuming that the previous modprobe is still effective.

I'll experiment some more when I install this again on a machine for the first time.

By the way, every time I install VirtualBox I need to search through the menus to find the option to turn on snapshots. I can never remember how to do it, especially this time ... been looking for a while and still haven't found it. Do you remember how? I can remember what the setting looks like, but not where to find it.

From the top menu of your VM : Machine -> Take a Snapshot (Host+T)

From the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager : Select the desired VM in the left pane then click on the "3 dots list" button (don't know how to name it) -> Snapshots -> Take

Thanks again. But i my experience, those methods to take a snapshot don't appear in the menus until smapshots are enabled. And the setting to do that isn't easy to find.

I just found it agian ...

NOW the menu entries to take a snapshot appear and work. Maybe I'll be able to remember where that option is the next time I need it. 😊
