tomscharbach Whatever the outcome, I'll keep this rabbit hole to myself and not post further about the issue.

Best of luck with that. As for myself, I'm going to flush my Garuda VM this afternoon. It's an interesting distro, but I've found out all I wanted to know about it. Time to move on and learn about something else.

WetGeek Void? Nix? Slackware? Gentoo? The possibilities are endless, speaking of which Endless OS? Inquiring minds want to know.

Brucehankins Inquiring minds want to know.

As you wrote, the possibilities are endless. It's going to take some to decide what should be next. I've given some thought to checking out a different distro with Budgie, but although those aren't endless, they're numerous.

Brucehankins world of Slack has always been intriguing to me--I'm a stranger to it. I tried Void and liked it. Vanilla, as I remember, but sound.

ArcoLinuxB, build your own Budgie from Arch. Or go the full blown Arch route.

WetGeek I've given some thought to checking out a different distro with Budgie

I tried to create a RebornOS VM today, without getting anywhere, and eventually gave up on it. I downloaded two different .ISOs (one LTS) and neither would install on a generously endowed VM. It's an Arch descendant that offers Budgie as a DE option, so it sounded attractive to me. But whatever I use, it's got to INSTALL, dammit.

Back to thinking about it ...

If I may make a suggestion, it might make sense to ensure that the distros you review are running 10.6 before taking the time to evaluate. Which distros have implemented 10.6 at this point, I don't know. @EbonJaeger might have a handle on that question.

I've been using Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 Beta as if it were my production environment for several weeks. Budgie is at 10.6.1, the Gnome stack at 41.4. I think that Ubuntu is trying to finalize the Gnome stack at 42 before release.

However, you should probably hold off until UB 22.04 LTS is released on April 21. Right now, Ubuntu is in a "bug bash" sprint to release, so UB updates two or three times a day as Ubuntu updates. That's fine for my purposes, but might not work well for you.

If you do look at UB 22.04 LTS, I'd suggest that you use the "Traditional Budgie" layout. Solus uses that general layout, and you will have a close comparison.

tomscharbach All I know of for sure are Solus (duh), UB, and Endevour. I don't think Fedora has the latest Budgie yet, or Budgie at all. I think someone was working on it, though. There might be others, and I just don't know about it, though.

Based on @murbert's suggestion, I took a look at the Ultramarine web page and decided it was just what I was looking for as a next adventure. A Fedora derivative, with Budgie as its flagship DE, what more could I ask?

Installation was easy. I've seen checksums listed for just about every .ISO that can be downloaded, but this is the first time I've seen an .ISO file that will do its own check if you ask it to. If you've successfully used that .ISO before, you can just click to install the OS. If it's just been downloaded, you can opt to ckeck media and install the OS.

Unlike a typical installation wizard that moves from page to page as you click [Next], this one uses icons on a main page to let you perform the necessary tasks in any order that you want. Each represents a question that you answer after you click it.

This is as far as I've gotten so far this morning. See the typical Budgie icons on the screen. Now the real fun begins! More later...

tomscharbach maybe 10.6 has since been incorporated into the 22.04 release build.

As a mostly-Plasma user, I don't remember how to check for the Budgie version on this VM. I thought there might be an "About" link in the Budgie Settings dialog, but sadly, there isn't. If you'll remind me how to find that information, I'll be glad to tell you what's here.

As for myself, it doesn't matter whether it's Budgie 10.5 or Budgie 10.6 ... I'm more interested in the distro. As an ex-Budgie user, it's familiar enough that I'm having no problems getting things set up the way I want them, and I'm very impressed, so far.

I decided not to install Thunderbird for email on these VMs, since I always install Vivaldi anyway, so this is also giving me an opportunity to see how Vivaldi is comming along with their beta. I'm also impressed with that. If you use Vivaldi, and haven't taken a look at their email support in a while, you might be surprised at its current state. I was.

By the way, I'm posting this from Vivaldi on Ultramarine.

The VM is almost configured the way I want it already, but I'm going to take a break now to fix breakfast for us here. My wife and granddaughter will be getting up soon. I'll provide more details about Ultramarine soon, but for now, just know that I'm very impressed overall. Very impressed.

You can usually get the "About" information in most distros by running either screenfetch or neofetch from the terminal. The output is slightly different:

              NEOFETCH OUTPUT

              SCREENFETCH OUTPUT

You will probably have to install the program to run it. I don't know the install command in Fedora because I've never used it. My guess is that it will sudo dnf install neofetch or sudo dnf install screenfetch respectively. You'll have to check.

On second thought, it isn't worth the effort on your part. The current released Ultramarine version was released in December, so it has to be 10.5 rather than 10.6.

WetGeek just know that I'm very impressed overall. Very impressed.

Before I leave for a while, I thought I'd close the VM and check its size in the Virtual Media Manager. Did I mention that I'm impressed with Ultramarine?

The Plasma.vdi, of course, is a Solus VM. My Ultramarine VM is set up nearly the same as the Solus Plasma VM, with the exception of no Thunderbird on Ultramarine, and it's a little more than half the size of the Solus VM. For someone with a modest amount of storage for an OS, that might be significant.

OFF TOPIC: Would it be possible for a moderator to change the name of this thread to something like "Distro Reviews"? We've evolved far beyond its current title already.

Harvey changed the title to Distro Reviews .

tomscharbach My guess is that it will sudo dnf install neofetch

Thanks for the reminder about neofetch. I have used it, but only once, quite a while ago.

Now, I'm REALLLY going to go fix breakfast.

I installed this next to windows last night🙂. I dig it as well

In the meantime I am forced to install Windows to do my tax return. I think my old T420 will have to suffer the dishonour 🙁

tomscharbach My guess is that it will sudo dnf install neofetch

No need for that. In the terminal I just entered: neofetch, and got the "command neofetch not found" error. Then, about a half-second later it asked me if I wanted to install the package containing neofetch. I answered "Y", and it happened, then ran the command. That was also how I installed vivaldi-stable previously. Just try to run a command, and if it isn't installed, but does exist, it will be found, installed, and run.

I'm not sure how you could tell the version of Budgie from the neofetch output, but it contains much interesting data about the VM and its host. As I wrote, 10.5 or 10.6 doesn't matter to me. I'm having fun.
