Harvey That latter result is painful, but that's pretty much how my Centurylink is today.
Centurylink's Rural DSL is a huge pain in the ass, especially when it rains (my internet slows down even more or drops out).
My experience with distros like Ubuntu, Pop! OS, etc. is when the connection drops when updating or installing software... often it has to start over or even breaks my OS.
SolusOS has so far been the most graceful. When the connection drops, it pauses. If I just type the command again, it resumes perfectly.
I really only have two major gripes with Solus:
Solus does not have the ability to just easily switch from the shitty integrated Intel graphics or hybrid graphics mode to just my dedicated NVIDIA GPU like I could in Pop! OS.
Software compatibility is not as numerous (more applications support Debian/Ubuntu out of the box without having to compile anything).
Welcome to 2022, Centurylink! This is NOT what I would call acceptable internet in 2022.
