solus fails to boot after restart

i successfully installed solus v4.2 yesterday (as i was having trouble with 4.3 for an unknown reason). I tried to boot it up again today, only to be left staring at a black screen. i pressed the power button to shut it down, and this message was shown on-screen for a brief second:
[ 33.526045] systend-shutdown[1]: Failed to finalize DM devices, ignoring. _
has anyone run into this issue before and can it be fixed without a fresh install?

Staudey no i did not, should i have?
i have a friend who’s quite good with linux and we’re trying to fix the problem together. we got into the terminal (alt+shift+f3 i think was the shortcut) and there seems to be an issue with lightdm, the system device manager.

if we make any breakthroughs i’ll post here, and if anyone can help in any way i’d appreciate it.

Yes, especially after a fresh installation it's important to do a full update first. If you start installing software without that, you might end up with a broken configuration (since installing software and their dependencies will pull in some, but not all, updates, so you end up with a Frankenstein system of old and new libraries, kernels, etc.)

As brent said, the command sudo eopkg up can be used to perform a full upgrade from the terminal.

troubleshooting if this happens 'traditionally' goes somethin' like this:
sudo eopkg up (total update then you reboot)
also
sudo eopkg check (tells if if there is a/are some broken packages)
sudo eopkg check | grep Broken | awk '{print $4}' | xargs sudo eopkg it --reinstall (this will do the check plus reinstall broken then reboot)
I personally like to check then fix myself but it does not matter.
if you are still getting that error after all that there is a command to reset the desktop (remarry lightdm to budgie or other) but try the fixes with the reboots first. my 2 cents

I would add that the last time I installed Solus I couldn't reboot after just uninstalling Firefox and Thunderbird and rebooting. Drove me crazy having to update everything just to uninstall it after rebooting LOL

riffer I don't know if there's any merit to the notion, but I am superstitious about uninstalling the native apps that are woven into the operating system, so I don't touch 'em. Your story reinforces this! 😀

elfprince if you don't like the defaults (I don't like MPV for instance) so easy to right-click and 'open with VLC'. Even my 'change default applications' settings are default🙂.
