Live login for MATE?

I'm busy re-creating the Solus VMs that I had on my Plasma laptop, and I can't get past the password for Live on the MATE VM. I've tried "live" and I've tried leaving the password empty. Both of those result in an invalid password and a return to the logon screen. What am I doing wrong?

This is a known bug with the last MATE ISO when used on VMs. Try with a 4.2 ISO.

I removed my first MATE VM and carefully created a new one:

As you can see, it's asking for a password for the Live User. None of the others (Budgie and Plasma) that I created do that. They simply go right into installation on the virtual disk. What's up with MATE?

As before, neither "live" nor an empty password work. It just returns to the logon screen and insists it needs a password.

The MATE VM is different from the others in another way. The desktop icon for it is the gear, which usually indicates settings. The other icons are the usual VirtualBox icon. All the icons correctly launch their associated VM, but MATE is the only one I can do nothing with. The others have been fully updated.

These VMs are really not cooperating. The GNOME VM starts out okay, and in the Applications menu there's an item to do an install. No request for a Live User password. The desktop icom matches the gear that appeared for MATE.

The installation goes as expected for the first few screens, but after I select my location, I get this:

I'm going to remove the MATE and GNOME VMs for now, and maybe try to create them again after the new .ISO files arrive.

@WetGeek This is just a thought from left field, but have you considered the possibility that the installation (Live) mount is not fully unmounting/releasing when you reboot after installation? I've had that happen a number of times with VM's in Gnome Boxes, and the "boot into Live" symptoms sound similar.

That's unlikely to be the case. I learned a long time ago to go back to the VB manager and use it to remove the .ISO file from the VM before I return tothe VM and reboot it after installation. If I didn't do that, it would boot the .ISO file again instead of the VM.

That's not a terrible thing, of course, since I could just exit from it and restart the VM, but it's an extra step I'd rather avoid. Removing the .ISO file from the virtual CD drive before I click on "Reboot" is easy, and works every time.

And in the present case, the installation never happened. It was asking me for the Live User login instead of offering the "Install OS" button to begin the installation.

What you are describing sounds like a flawed interaction or disconnect between distro installation and VB installation. I don't have a clue.

What it turned out to be is simply flawed Solus 4.3 .ISO files. In another thread I detailed using the 4.2 versions instead, and those just required a little more upgrading, but they worked without a problem.
