ubuntu just got a new logo https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/03/ubuntu-has-a-brand-new-logo

this made me think do we need a new one for solus? the current one isnt bad but ive never been a huge fan. looks a bit home made, doesent scale too well and looses a bit of its effect when in monochrome

just a thought, not planning to start a crusade against the current one

    Agree!
Would be a new way to show the reborn of Solus!

I actually really like the current logo (at least a lot more than the Ubuntu one), but if someone creates something even better, I wouldn't be opposed to a logo change (not my decision to make though).

Only issue with the current one is that it has some fine details which are barely visible when it's shown in a small size (e.g. favicon)

Solus scales down as well as most linux logos, and does better in monochrome that most. This illustration sets the logo sizes to 40-50 pixels (roughly taskbar/panel size):

The logos were taken from the Flatpak setup screen, where you can see the logos in a larger scale:

Staudey Only issue with the current one is that it has some fine details which are barely visible when it's shown in a small size (e.g. favicon)

True enough, but it is still recognizable (capture taken from Microsoft Edge):

It seems to me that the Solus team has better things to do, unless a volunteer with significant logo design experience shows up and wants to develop different takes on the sailboat theme. I've never designed a logo, but I've worked with professionals who were designing logos for Fortune 100 company intranets, and logo design is no small task.

        ⚠️ Subjective Judgments Ahead ⚠️

I'm also very fond of the current Solus logo, and overall branding. It avoids some common design pitfalls¹⁺², and a personal pet peeve³:

        1. bland, unmemorable, abstract minimalism (eg. Mageia)
        2. cluttered, overwrought, abstract maximalism (eg. CentOS)
        3. a Disneyfied animal mascot (eg. Pardus — yes, yes eopkg, I know)

N1X3L bland, unmemorable, abstract minimalism (eg. Mageia)

Case in point: If you hadn't pointed it out (and the file did have another name), I'd have no idea that this was Mageia. ^^

In my opinion no, the current one is fine and of all the things to spend time/money on this seems the least important.

To my knowledge we do not have artists on the team and paying someone else to redesign something for absolutely no reason is just a waste of time and money. Additionally design competitions suck and the project would require complete ownership of the logo which would be unfair to the artist if they're not getting paid, which as I suggested I think is a waste of money at this stage.

For what it is worth, I sent the Solus logo to one of the team who designed logos for a corporate intranet I worked on years ago.

I also sent along what I know of the history of the logo -- the logo depicts a Galway Hooker Irish fishing boat, and that Ikey Doherty, also Irish and the founder of Solus, commented in a interview that he wanted the logo to convey "new horizons, open sails".

She thought that the logo was well designed and conveyed the intended message with style. So that's one professional opinion.

She also said that the logo was either professionally designed or designed by a skilled non-professional.

Yes and if I was told to stop using the logo I would as I do not own it. Just like 99% of users avatars on the web. Which has absolutely nothing to do with Solus needing to own the logo and control its usage.

EDIT. Removed it anyway. Enjoy the H logo 😛
EDIT2: Enjoy me wearing a welding helmet instead.

Harvey Understood! I was just playing at having a path forward, for Mr. Birdman to be the new logo. It was just a bit of fun, because I've always enjoyed your avatar.

              EDIT: 💔

Not to mention that the logo is widely recognized as the Solus brand. Changing the logo in any significant way would break the link between logo and brand.

I say that the logo is fine how it is. Simple, recognizable and attractive.

It's just perfect, at least, from my point of view.

                Dinimixis_DEMZ

I know how to work very well with Inkscape and GIMP, but the original image is simply perfect, I can't find anything to do to it. I think nothing should be done to him.

What's more, I feel that I desecrate the purity of the original file by altering it, if the original author is around, I want to tell him that he has my respects...

As boats go, it's very nice.

I would much rather have a skull though 🤣

Dinimixis_DEMZ Well, at least in my case, I'm not someone remarkable and I don't intervene in the discussions either since by now I hadn't felt "prepared" to contribute something decent. Anyway, I hope one day to help you with something. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for maintaining an active and well-structured distribution, at least it has worked wonderfully for me for years. (Except for LDM, now I use GDM)

riffer I would much rather have a skull though
