KDE as Solus flagship DE

I've been using Solus Plasma spin for a while and it's the smoothest and overall the best KDE Plasma experience I had on any distro. With all this fuss about Budgie I think it would be better for Solus to fully embrace KDE as its first choice, resources that were spent on Budgie can be diverted to other more pressing matters.

The (in your opinion) fact that Solus implements Plasma better than other distros is (in my opinion) irrelevant.

Budgie is now independently developed, as are Plasma, Mate and Gnome. The resources devoted to maintaining Budgie as part of the distro at this point are more or less equal to the resources devoted to maintaining Plasma, Mate and Gnome as part of the distro.

So I'm not quite sure what you think that Solus would gain by elevating Plasma to a privileged position and disproportionately devoting resources to Plasma, at the expense of Budgie, Mate and Gnome, other than to provoke an exodus from Solus by users of those desktop environments.

Gordi I agree that Solus Plasma is the best OOB experience I've had with Plasma, I even prefer it to KDE Neon.
However, I don't think any one distro gets "preferential" treatment from the Solus team. If you look at the download page it simply lists the DEs available with a brief snippet. The main page has a screenshot of Budgie, but even the learn more link doesn't specifically state Budgie is the flagship DE. I'd argue that there is no one flagship DE currently and that all receive equal prioritization, allowing the user to choose with DE best fits their workflow.

Gordi I vote for Solus Budgie. I've been using it for three years and it's the smoothest and overall the best GNU/Linux experience I have ever had. I tried Solus Plasma this week as it has been praised everywhere for so long - But was not impressed myself like I still am with Budgie.

Exactly my thoughts. I had always thought that the four desktops are equally loved. It reminds me of the FAQ of KDE Neon:

Nope. KDE believes it is important to work with many distributions, as each brings unique value and expertise for their respective users.

Solus and Budgie were born together, and Budgie is considered one of the identity signs of Solus, but the other versions of Solus have no less value. I use Solus KDE, btw

Budgie was indeed considered the flagship Solus DE for a long time, at least de facto (after all it was developed as part of the same project). With the projects now split up again, it's an open question whether it still is. All DEs have their own maintainers, and @EbonJaeger is directly contributing to the Budgie project, so there is still at least one foot in the door ^^
FWIW I don't see the value in declaring Solus Plasma the flagship DE as of now; and most people still seem to think of Budgie as the "main" DE for Solus.

FWIW, Main laptop is KDE but do have a Budgie mini PC as well.

Did you experience any problem while trying Solus KDE? I ask because one thing is that you suffered a problem that made you discard Plasma, and another thing is that you like Budgie more than Plasma.

I'm a big fan of Plasma, but I tried Solus Mate and liked a LOT what I saw. Sometimes I feel tempted to switch. In the end, you have to choose one DE and stick to it (in theory, you can use several DE's, but in practice, it's a source of problems).

joluveba joluveba. I did discover some glitches with Solus Plasma, like a dropdown box with identical font and background color. Sure that's a disappointment. But overall Budgie is more responsive and looks way better, polished, modern, professional. It looks and feels like a finished quality product. Solus Budgie was the first distro I was pleased enough to actually use day after day.

I had been testing a few distros every now and then for over 15 years and was not impressed with any flavor of Ubuntu for example. If my first experience three years ago with Solus would have been like this week with Plasma I would still be using Windows only.

Solus Budgie has the looks, the responsivenes and then some. For example it seems to have all the bits and pieces preinstalled which are needed to access my other devices, partitions and RAR-archives even.

If the font and the background color are identical, then it's illegible. Bummer. I would like to ask you which theme you were using, was it the default theme? I think it is Solus Dark, but I'm not sure, I change it to Breeze Light as soon as I install it.

On the other hand, you seem to be very happy with Budgie 😄 , so no need to give Plasma another chance.

Good idea. I don't know why the dark theme is the default. At least they're easy to change.

I thought a dark theme might be easeir on my eyes, but for me it turned out to be just the opposite. Trying to differentiate a dark dialog on top of a dark window sent me running towards the light. 😄
