Linux Black holes?

If I was to install an older version of solus would it still update? Prob not between versions right?
Reason asking just stepped in a few black holes with winders with vista and win7 totally wont use anything above win7 but installed win7 no sp1 like never got it updating again BUT I DID...LOL .
Or are the older solus versions just gone without updates? I see the need to keep up with techno But I guess a guy would just find something different if he didnt like the change. Dunno was just something on my mind!
Solus first linux I have had on computers more than 6months 2 years I think now.

As for your question, I have a 2-3 year old .iso I use as the rescue usb if I need it.
If I installed it to another USB (if it lets me) and I had success...
then would it update that 4.1 iso to 4.3 and install 500-1000 packages....?
probably yes it would update...but will it update successfully is the question. Don't know but it's an interesting question.

Solus is a rolling release. That means that all you need to do is update that old version.

Older version of Solus? What do you mean? If you mean an older ISO, then yes that will still have updates since Solus doesn't follow the Ubuntu model of releases.

WetGeek begs the question though. has anyone here ever done made the jump from 3.8/3.9/4/1 all the way to 4.3 successfully? Likely I'm overthinking

I answered his question theoretically. According to the Solus "rolling release" principle, one should be able to do that. Theoretically, until somebody proves it can be done, of course.

brent I had a laptop that I didn't update for 2 years and it worked. I just remember that there was a systemd thing that didn't make the process as smooth as one would like but yes it definitely possible.

Additionally, existing ISOs will no longer be able to update after the legacy server is retired. We are in the process of issuing new ISOs (which will be Solus 3.9999) that will default to the new repo URLs. This measure is being taken to ensure new installs via the new ISOs have a viable upgrade path. It should also reduce any issues that users have experienced with the first upgrade post-install and will feature hardware enablement for new CPUs and GPUs that have been released since the last ISO. Ahhh ok

I was thinking more like let's say he had 3.8 and tries to upgrade to 4.3. Hundreds of packages like Firefox have already been updated likely near 100 times between several .isos. that's where I'm guessing could be a problem.

Ah yes, I can't remember the details or find the post about it, but there was something that could disrupt the update process, true.

Anyway, what was your original intent again, @Axios? I think I don't fully understand why you want to install an old iso in the first place. Solus installed from an old ISO should be mostly identical to one installed from a new ISO, after the updates have been applied.

I'm pretty sure that those packages wouldn't have to go through all the 100's of individual upgrades. Just from what's there now to what should be there after the update.

WetGeek you are right. but having been on the receiving end of some aborted rollbacks due to deprecations and such I thought stupidly perhaps that if you can fail updating backwards then one could certainly fail updating forwards. a working theory only.
