Brucehankins I lean towards openSUSE, but it would have to.be Tumbleweed
That's the distro that I used for longer than any other -- far longer than I've used Solus. I especially appreciated YaST, as it let me provide my password just once, and then do whatever maintenance was needed, without constantly asking for credentials. I'm downloading their newest .ISO file now, just to see what's new with Tumbleweed.
And no, I'm not giving up on Solus already -- in fact, I'm not even creating a USB stick for openSUSE. I just want to create a VM to see what it's now like just in case there's any reason for me to change in the future. I sincerely hope that there's never any need to do that.
LATER: Well, I'm back, and not particularly encouraged about the last couple of hours I've spent trying to get openSUSE working in a VirtualBox VM. For one thing, the only way I could get the display to stay in full HD resolution was to log on as root. Logging on as a regular user would allow me to set 1920x1080 as the display resolution, but by pressing [Apply] it would jump to that size, and then immediately return to 800x600. So I needed to log on as root in order to continue my exploration.
I realize this is undoubtedly a VirtualBox issue, not an openSUSE issue, but no amount of fussing with the VB settings would solve the problem. And I'm a very experienced VirutalBox user, if I say so myself.
Running as root, then, I tried to do a bit of configuration. I could neither install Vivaldi nor the Micro command line editor. The only community repository that was available was Packman, and adding that didn't help. Using Firefox (the default browser) to download the Vivaldi .RPM installer from their website didn't help. The SUSE installer wouldn't install it.
Obviously, I would not have had the VBoxClient errors if I were installing onto hardware but I'm not ready for that yet. And I'm not ready to abandon the world's best browser, and the best CLI text editor. I didn't even try to find Restic, my backup software. That would be another show-stopper if I couldn't install that.
I set out to try the newest version of openSUSE, and now I've done that. I'm going to remove that VM now.
