Do ram stick sizes need to be of same

hello there! when i was on windows i was told that i cant shouldnt keep different sized ram sticks as it doesnt give the full perfomance, i was wonder it will be same for solus. i actually hav 4gb ddr3 ram and i got a spare ddr3 2gb ram . In my laptop

yes, and its something hardware specific - regardless of what OS you are using. RAM sticks should have the same size and frequency at which they operate, otherwise you will experience bottlenecking (you wont achieve expected efficiency), ideally they should be of the same vendor and series to make sure that one wont impair the other.

I have two 4GB's and one 8GB stick on a budgie desktop and running just fine... niobleoum is desktop more forgiving?

Like brent says he has 2 different sizes and it works thats because you must match the frequency otherwise ram runs at lowest speed stick. But sometimes you do run into compat problems that way and 2 different vendors can be issues to
best way is like niobleoum said but sometimes thats not in the cards. Your computer will choke if it does not like it and prob not boot at all.

it's sad in 2021 everything digital still depends on that skittish relationship of mobo&mem. I've been in the 'not like it' category many times

Most regular AMD and Intel motherboards support running in dual channel mode when an even number of memory modules are installed. They will run in single channel mode when an odd number of modules are detected.

Not sure about the high end motherboards like Threadripper boards and stuff how they handle memory modules exactly as I don't own one. I know they usually support up to 8 or 16 memory modules depending on the motherboard.

Always check to see what your motherboard itself supports as most are documented to work both ways.

If possible use 2 memory sticks, not 4, less problems that way and depending on the mobo use slots 2 & 4.
