In Praise of Solus Repo (nice Mate review)

Came across this by accident tonight, a 10-minute solus review posted a couple days ago on the 9th.

Great Sol Mate review with the gentlemen in high praise of repo availability of his favorite packages including the 3rd party sections. He spent some time in software center and spent some time smitten with the control center of Mate and somewhere around the 7 minute mark: "this desktop is quick, fast, and stays out of your way." Only grumble was loading it in his VM at beginning.

Question: selecting a random package in the software center, he wondered if it was repo, flatpak, or snap, or unidentified by Solus. Do other distros NOT have Flatpak/Snap stores and instead port all that stuff into their own repo where curated and non-curated live together? Seemed that was what he was used to.

Some distributions have software centres that intergrate snap/flatpak and traditional distro repositories all in the same place. Solus does not or tho it is planned with the eventual rewrite, it is my understanding that when this integration occurs it will be made clear to the user if it is a universal package format or something from the repository.

Everything in the software center at this stage is an .eopkg built specifically for Solus, either from the repository proper or in case of the "Third Party" section of the software center, an .eopkg built on your system in real time. The latter is done in order to comply with closed source licenses of software in said section that are worded in a way that specifically prevents the distributing of their software by third parties.

I had the exact same issue trying to run Solus Mate with Gnome boxes. Good to know it works in Virtual Box!

He seemed bent on keeping his review at the 10 minute mark so when this sequence happened and he expected an unmarked 'universal' repo, and speculated about it, he soon went into another avenue and left that thought there. When Solus integrates I have no doubt they'd identify the package--integrity is built in to this distro.
Thank you for the confirmation such a beast exists...I don't get out much flavour-wise🙂
