Seems to be a persistent one. I removed the old VM including all of its files, created a new one, and started it with no problem. Sadly, I didn't take a snapshot at that point. Then I did an update (345 or so upgrades) and rebooted.

The result was the same as with the earlier VM. Black screen with the unblinking cursor at 0:0.

I'll see if I can get to a tty from there, but I think this VM is totally hosed already. Since I don't use it for anything important, it's not a tragedy, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this, just for my own peace of mind.

I created a new Budgie VM, and saved a "Fresh Installation" snapshot before changing anything. Then I remembered that at one time we needed to change the video setting. Rather than use the default, this time I changed that to VBoxSVGA, and created another snapshot.

After that, I ran an update that included 348 upgraded packages, and this time a reboot resulted in a running machine. I don't remember changing that setting for the previous Budgie VM, but perhaps I did. I'd been using it and updating it for a pretty long time.

Anyway, if you have a Budgie VM that croaked after this week's update, be sure that your video support is set to VBoxSVGA. With that, my VM is running just fine.

Just to check. Did you reboot the host after update?

open-vm-tools and virtualbox are built against the kernel so with a kernel update it may have issues if you do not reboot.

To spin off Harvey's comment, I too did reboot after update, successfully.

If you are able to switch to tty 2 (Ctrl + Alt + F2) on the VM and then login, then check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any indication of the problem as well as sudo journalctl -b that would be helpful.

If there is anything concrete there we can investigate. It's also helpful if you indicate what you are using for the vm - virt-manager, virtualbox , etc.

One possible issue could be that i wasn't able to rebuild xorg-driver-video-qxl against the reverted Xorg update. Meaning it still was using the new xorg ABI. However, I tested xorg-driver-video-qxl personally on a Budgie VM so I don't think that should be the issue.

Just a note on this::

Budgie was my first Solus DE, and it was always good. But in creating this VM with today's Budgie, I was really amazed. Little annoyances that used to need workarounds (or ignoring) are now gone, and the installation and updates went very smoothly. Default settings are very reasonable, IMHO.

If my current DE were to disappear tomorrow, I could very happily change back to Budgie as a daily driver. And it's the one DE I'd recommend that new Solus users start with. Kudos to any and all who are on the Budgie team!

Agreed. Either 100% or 200% isn't a great choice for today's high-resolution monitors and TVs. I do well with 125% on my HD laptop screen, and a whold lot bigger factor for the media machine streaming to my 4K television.

That's what got me started using Plasma. I didn't care much for our earliest attempts with it, but the team did a fantastic job after brief learning curve. I no longer use Plasma because it fits my screen resolutions, but because it's beautiful, competent, and very configurable

With fractional scaling, I'd never have looked beyond Budgie, my first love.

algent I believe that requires a Mutter patch that Solus doesn't carry. I don't know if there is interest in pulling it in or not.
