Just started using the Elecom M-DT2 "Deft" wireless, forefinger-operated, 8-button trackball.
Basic mouse functionality works well - there was no need to install extra drivers.
Solus does not recognize the three 'function' buttons, or the wheel's tilt-clicks, though, so mapping the extra buttons is a bit of a challenge.
I use a Zowie FK2. Driverless, adjustable DPI, ambidextrous, and has two thumb buttons. Detent scroll wheel. A little expensive, but overall very happy with it.

Solarmass The mouse is symmetrical from side-to-side, yes. (Even the thumb buttons are mirrored, so it technically has four of them 
--though they can't be programmed to do four separate things.)
My favorite all-time mouse is the Logitech Marathon M705 but it's finally wearing out after 12 years. Now trying out the Logitech M720 Triathlon.
do razer mice work out of the box? as in basic clicking, cursor movement, or are any of the razer packages in the respos needed? or are they mostly for customizing LEDS and button behaviour etc?
Logitech M510. Six of those on computers in this house. Inexpensive, absolutely reliable, and does everything a mouse needs to do.
Logitech MX Master. I have one for home and one at work, with a receiver in each of my computers. I set them to different channels so I can use the mouse with whatever computer I happen to be using just by changing the channel (and not having to switch dongles around).
I use solaar from the repo to sync/manage it and it shows the battery level in the system tray.

Lucien_Lachance The mouse itself will work fine without installing anything. If you want to change settings (especially RGB) you'll want to install polychromatic. That will pull in the openrazer drivers for the extra functionality. It can be a little bit buggy regarding default settings, but it's what I use for my Naga Trinity.

Using Logitech Wireless M331 Silent Plus and work seamlessly.
Logitech MX Master. It is now on its third generation, but not much is added - the first generation can be got for less than £30 if you catch an offer. The feel is perfect.
On occasion I use a vertical mouse, a wired (weird) DXT Mouse - someone leaving my company gave me it and I had no idea it cost about £80 new until I looked it up! It is astonishingly comfortable and made of high-quality materials (no visible wear after months of use), although it takes a bit of getting used to.
Lucien_Lachance I have the stupid overpriced Razer Mamba Hyperflux combo (pad and mouse) and love it as it is ultralight and fast. I have RSI issues and a superlight mouse is key to long hours on a computer. It worked out the box when I switched to Solus on my gaming machine, and I ran the OpenRazer drivers for a while, but the rgb stuff didn't work with mine, as it is a super niche mouse, so I am currently running it with default drivers again, and all is well. Button settings have never been lost or anything. If you can get one of these set ups NOT at retail (I got a review sample free) I highly recommend them, but damned if I'd ever pay $200 for a mouse.

Cheapest wireless mouse in the computer store. Happened to be a logi with some numbers after it but I threw the manual and packaging away.

Zowie EC1-A, 'cause I have big hands. still feels a bit weird to use a big mouse after decades of using tiny mice though. plus I'm not really a fan of the coloured LED or the fact that I have to use a mouse mat, but oh well.
until fairly recently I was using a beige eMachines ball mouse of all things 
cleaning the rollers was weirdly satisfying...
