Can't launch plasma

Writing as I work:

Launched budgie live disc again so I have a computer in the interim, plus it'll let me see if I did something wrong to the hard drive maybe? It also failed to instal, prior to erasing partitions with Gparted.. the GParted GUI in budgie looks much more sensible, and now I'm wondering if it actually formatted it or just deleted the partition. Gonna have to double check that, but for now I'll continue the test replicated what I did previously (just deleting all partitions)

Budgie installed and loaded up properly.. seems odd..

Could it be that it's something to do with the boot list, or whatever? Grub, I think? Maybe it's not being properly overwritten during the installation process..? So it's still trying to point me to budgie, but not finding it?

I would think that wouldn't be a problem, but it's something to test, assuming I don't hear anything from someone else beforehand..

Deleted budgie file, relaunched. Grub says no partition exists, so that wasn't or at least isn't an issue. Seemed unlikely but figured I'd try. Attempting to reinstall Plasma now.

Was able to launch terminal and log in using the credentials from instal. Typed "systemctl status gdm" and it returned "unit gdm.service could not be found."

Wait, is GDM gnome specific? Hrmm..

Typed in "sudo eopkg up -y" and hoping for the best!

Well, that created an alternate boot option, which does the exact same thing. So drats..

Lightdm is the Budgie display manager. Uninstall/remove/run away from GDM.

Solved it. It's an issue with Nvidia drivers!

Heres how i made it into live desktop with >1660Ti:

Ctrl+alt+F2 into login prompt when you get >blinking underscore screen
Login with root/root
eokpg it nvidia-glx-driver-current
systemctl start lightdm
Now you should have desktop

You have to do same again after install but >instead of root use your user/password and >forget systemctl command just reboot for >convenience

I was already at the installation side, so I just logged in and used "sudo eokpg it nvidia-glx-driver-current"

Don't know how to mark this as solved though... Lol..

CT42 Congrats on actually reading old posts that will for sure, much of the time, lead one to formulate a strategy. I applaud your patience. But what wrecked your display manager in the first place?

brent I'm assuming that Plasma has Nvidia drivers that aren't working... in fact, I'm having an issue where wine is telling me my graphics card drivers aren't up to date or something which is a whole different issue.. The Budgie version didn't have that problem, even with a fresh install after I had attempted to use the plasma version, so I've just gotta assume it's something in the current build, but idrk. I'm experienced enough with Linux in general to know I know jack all about it lol. One day, though, that'll change, maybe. 😛

I wana give some feedback for me also I had issues with Plasma and went with Budgie instead when I tried Solus 4.3 , I have a Nvidia card too

Taoistpenguin When you boot into it, you're getting the blinking underscore? If so, are you able to boot into the terminal using Ctrl + alt + F2?

If yes, then what GFX card are you using? That may be able to help with finding out the exact issue. I'm not messing with it now, but soon I'll be messing with the drivers again, bc wine says my drivers aren't the right ones for my GPU, and as I'm messing with that I may find out something in regards to your problem. As my PC mostly works (well... ish... I can't use EGS even via Lutris which is a big problem for me, but I've just got higher priorities atm) it'll be a while before I really start working on it, so if your problem is time sensitive I wouldn't wait on me... but if you're doing it on an old PC or a craptop, or even a VM I may stumble upon a solution for ya -shrug-
