Archdevil I don't use IDLE, so I can't answer your question regarding the quotes. But given the context you've provided, I think there might be another underlying cause to the issues you're having. At least it's something that's often involved with syntax errors. Do you know what version of Python you're using with IDLE, and what is the version used by whatever tutorial/guide you're following?
Python made some breaking changes in syntax between versions 2 and 3, notably regarding print
. The default Python interpreter for Solus is on version 2, but most modern resources for Python use version 3. You can test what version you're using by running python --version
in your terminal:
↪ python --version
Python 2.7.18
From within IDLE, the version should likely be displayed when you launch it, but otherwise you can get it by running:
>>> import sys
>>> print(sys.version)
2.7.18 (default, Aug 30 2021, 13:58:29)
[GCC 11.2.0]
Hope that helps!
P.S. If you end up having to use another version of Python, I recommend looking into how to set up a virtual environment. Even for hobbyist programmers, I think it's a good precaution to take to ensure you don't break your system. You can read this old thread for more discussions/references on the subject.
