jppelt Workspaces are actually not Solus specific, they are part of the desktop environment (ie. Budgie, Gnome, Mate, Plasma), and even exist outside of Linux on MACos and that other one. Workspaces are mainly intended to organize workflow or work-specific tasks a bit cleaner. I wouldn't say they are fully independent of each other as a) if you have a chat app such as Discord on workspace 2, you will still receive Discord notifications on whichever current Workspace you are on, and b) you can alt+tab across programs on different workspaces. In Budgie, there is a setting for this you'd have to enable in Budgie-Settings. So, short answer - no they are not sandboxed, but they are great to keep work-specific workflows organized across dedicated Workspaces.
