I've created a swap partition afterwards but the problem remains with budgie and gnome. Only with the Mate DE it's not occuring.

It's hard to say without any experience in gnome shell but this could be an upstream problem. I am finding some things that are similar in gnome shell but am not sure if they are the same issue. The issues I am seeing are from a year ago.

The same thing happens to me after 4.3. I do have a swap partition, and I am using the same laptop I used with previous version and didn't happen.
I know my laptop it's not on the compatible laptops but it used to work perfectly with 4.2 and previous versions, with the new 4.3 I have encounter a few issues that didn't occurred before.

Small update. I just resumed from sleep and everything was fine. Just out of curiosity I suspended via the power menu on budgie and then woke it. It flashed the desktop with everything there then dropped to the blue ttl interface, flashed then showed the login page. I logged in and the shell had started fresh again with everything gone. So I guess it is sometimes crashing on waking up. It hadn't been that long though so the screen could have just locked and not actually suspended initially this time.

Hey guys, removing the proprietary nvidia drivers with doflicky solved the issue for me after reboot.

Epicreator maybe there are some issues with intel onboard graphics and nvidia proprietary causing this behavior

Do you experience the issue immediately after wake-up or do you get back your session for a short time and it then kills the session and you're back to the login?
I have such issue since beginning of this year and couldn't find the root cause until now. Currently it's less frequent, but it also seems to depend on the software running when suspending the laptop (e.g. more frequent with Brave or VS Code). There's an open ticket https://dev.getsol.us/T9592 for this kind of issue, but no progress since the root caus is unclear.

palto42 Second, like u described. I've got back to the session and then again to the login screen. I had to type my password twice and all programs were gone. Now it just works fine without the proprietary drivers. With the Mate Login it also doesn't happen with proprietary drivers.

Epicreator I have no proprietary drivers installed, my laptop has an ATI MobilityRadeon HD5650 (AMD). So currently no fix for me as long as I use Budgie.

I dont have a swap partition on my Lenovo Ideapad S340.
Both suspend and hibernate work as it should.
The laptop has a Ryzen processor with built in graphic processor.
Maybe your problem is with the Nvidia driver since i have no problem.

Can anyone from the dev team shed some light on a possible fix for this? I really really want to stay on Budgie but just can if it keeps killing everything on suspend. I'd love to help by trying anything if I can. Could it possibly be a swap size issue? I currently have 8 GB of swap and 24GB of memory.

That would only make a difference if more than 8 GB were in use when you tried to suspend. Having swap larger than RAM would be ideal, so you could safely use it in all possible cases.
