Wine Issue (Dependency?)

Hello,
I'm fairly new to linux and I've been doing some distro hopping trying to find the best one for me. I quite like Solus Budgie but there's one piece of Windows software I need to have, GR Analyst. It's a weather radar software available from grlevelx.com. I have successfully installed Wine and GR Analyst in Ubuntu, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, and Garuda Linux. However, when I attempt the same thing in Solus it fails to render properly:

In all of the other distros I listed the software works perfectly and should look something like this:

The steps I took to install wine in Solus were as follows:
sudo eopkg install wine-devel
sudo eopkg install winetricks

To create the Wine prefix I did this:
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/wineapps/test1 winetricks

I think the first time I setup a prefix it prompted me to install mono, which I did. With subsequent prefixes it no longer prompts but appears to be installed check it via the winetricks uninstaller GUI.

When installing wine in Ubuntu most guides suggest running the command:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
I haven't been able to figure out how to do that in Solus, if it's possible. I understand this command to be related to 32 bit architecture. GR Analyst is a 32 bit program but I also tried installing it in a 64 bit prefix with the same result.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could be missing that would cause this software not to work in Solus even though I can get it running in a number of other distros?

Player1 Seems like you only installed wine without 32bit libraries. Try sudo eopg it wine-32bit and see if that fixes things. Btw you shouldn't normally need wine-devel

Thank you for your response, however, I'm still experiencing the same issue.
I entered sudo eopkg it wine-32bit into my existing install of Solus and got this message:
The following package(s) are already installed and are not going to be installed again: wine-32bit No packages to install.

I also tried live booting Solus on another machine and only installing wine-32bit, no wine-devel or winetricks. I was able to install GR Analyst but the display was still just a black image.

Player1 did you have to take any extra steps to get it working on OpenSuse or Ubuntu? ie. the step above about creating a 32bit wine prefix. Or did it just run fine after installing wine + GR Analyst?

h3o ok, I just downloaded Fedora on a VM and it worked by just installing wine + GR Analyst, but I had same error as you on Solus. Perhaps missing a dependency as you said. Might have something to do with DirectX support?

You could try to run from a terminal wine /path/to/program.exe to see if there are some error messages that could help troubleshooting this issue.

h3o Looks like Fedora is on 6.13 and we are on 6.14, maybe a diff in wine versions?

I personally have found that using Lutris to install my windows games/apps is much easier than trying to manually config the wine prefix. Usually when I have trouble it's because I forgot something, Lutris makes if fairly simple to review since its all GUI and easy to spot where you missed a path or selected the wrong wine version etc... Another bonus (especially if you also use PlayonLinux as well), is that you can download and and manage a bunch of wine versions easily. Lutris will see all the old wine versions that you can install via PoL.

Perfect example of this is World of Tanks. Every now and again, WoT will simply stop working after they update the launcher (which is a dumpster fire... aren't all launchers lol...) Lutris makes it really simple to just switch wine versions until I can find one that works with it again.

There are 3 versions of wine : wine (stable), wine (development) and wine staging.
I see you use wine-staging on fedora which is a version of wine that contains patches that haven't been upsteamed.
In solus, we opted for wine (development) which is a good compromise between wine stable which is very conservative and wine staging which contains many experimental patches.

So it would be nice to compare the same version of wine across the distributions to see if the problem is resolved by some experimental patches that haven't been upstreamed yet or if it is something else.

One of the first message I see in the version installed on Solus is

MESA-INTEL: warning: Performance support disabled, consider sysctl dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0

So I'd suggest running the following command

sudo sysctl dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0

Then you can try to run again

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/'Program Files (x86)'/GRLevelX/GR2Analyst_2/gr2analyst.exe

to see if it helps

By the way do you have hybrid GPU on your system or just the intel GPU alone ?

kyrios Yeah, seems Fedora ships with Wine Staging in its repos. I uninstalled that version and added a wine repo to install the development version.

Fedora Wine-Dev: working as expected

On Solus, I ran the command you posted above but still getting a blank screen:

I only have Intel on my laptop.. no dedicated graphics card, just whatever Intel integrated card came with my Lenovo X1C4 laptop.

kyrios ok I'm a bit confused now. For kicks, I installed Solus Plasma on a VM and the program is working fine from there. Wondering if anyone else wants to try this on their bare metal Solus to see if it's working for them.

kyrios Thank you for the suggestion. I tried sudo sysctl dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0 but I got this response:

sysctl: cannot stat /proc/sys/dev/i915/perf_stream_paranoid: No such file or directory

My main testing machine is an older laptop with integrated graphics but I've also tried live booting from usb on my desktop with a dedicated GPU. The only difference is that the laptop displays a black image with artifacts while my desktop displays a flat black image.

I also tried live booting the KDE version of Solus with the same result that I get in Budgie, just a black screen.

When I ran the software from the terminal I got these outputs which, at a glance, look very similar to what h3o had posted:

In Kubuntu I'm using Wine Development version 6.14 and in Garuda I'm using Wine Staging version 6.14.
Running sudo eopkg it wine in Solus installs version 6.12 while running sudo eopkg it wine-devel installs version 6.14.
I ran GR Analyst from terminal in Garuda (where it does work correctly) and got these outputs, which look about the same as the ones above from Solus:

I'm not sure if this would help you, but I have two Windows apps from sources that don't provide a Linux version. I created a Windows 10 VM using VirtualBox, and use that to run my Ring doorbell app, and my Nook ebook reader app. Your previous messages mentioned using Wine, so I assume you need Windows as well.

VirtualBox is in the Solus repositories, and it's easy to use. The Windows 10 ISO is available from Microsoft, and it works fine without being registered. If you install the Pro version, you can avoid creating a Windows user.

If you want to give this a try, and need help with VirtualBox, there are plenty of us here who use it, so help will always be given to he who asks. (With apologies to Professor Dumbledore.)

WetGeek on Windows.. if you disconnect network (either physically or disable in the VM) you can install without making a user account. It forces it to do an offline install, so you don't have to mess with the MS account stuff.

Maybe @Player1 will notice my reply anyway, and try a VM instead of Wine. It's surely a good solution for me in pretty much the same situation. (I've never had anything but grief the few times I tried using Wine.)

Are you talking about Windows 10 Home? If so, that's good to know. Windows 10 Pro doesn't require disconnecting, as it offers the opportunity to use a local account during setup. Just needs your user name and password, and doesn't create a Windows-based account. It sure tries to nudge you in that direction, though!

I've never found that option with Windows 10 Home, but if all you need to do is disconnect from your network, then that makes Home far more usable for those who want it. At work, I've used the Pro versions of Window for decades, so I guess it's just kind of a habit for me..

That can't be right. The current version of both packages in the (stable) repository is 6.14, so you shouldn't get 6.12 using that command.
