Yea, I want to be clear in that I have nothing against cryptocurrency, security/ utility tokens, and other blockchain / ledger technology (generally speaking). Like I said, I just don't believe we should be the judge of the value add of individual cryptocurrencies, security or utility tokens. This is something you should judge independently. It isn't sustainable for us to judge every cryptocurrency that crops up, there is practically a new cryptocurrency / coin shitcoin everyday as an example.
Building on this, what you or I value for cryptocurrencies or utility tokens may be wildly different. You may value cryptocurrencies where nodes are mixers and have a stronger emphasis on anonymity, whereas I may actually view public ledger / blockchain as a potentially good, modern solution to combat fraud, money laundering, and other illicit or illegal activities, so I may prefer strong KYC, clearer regulations + easy accounting/taxing, etc. Some may look at cryptocurrency as a replacement for fiat currency, whereas others may view specific tokens as simply a method to reduce transaction fees and times with little care for its use as an alternative to fiat.
There is a lot of nuance to cryptocurrencies, tokens, etc. Not to mention everything on the legislative side. It is a lot simpler for us to have packaging policies for software that is not tied to such nuanced matters, like browsers or text editors as examples. Besides, outside of those technical matters do you really think it is wise for these to be in the repo, only for the crypto to possibly fall out of favor with the package maintainer and the package be left to rot? Or would you rather have a clear position on it and understand "okay, I need to download the binary tarball, flatpak, or appimage myself for this, invest myself in ensuring I keep it up-to-date, and thus not be concerned about the opinions of another potential user of it. It won't go away unless I nuke it off my own system. Simple.".
In this specific case, I imagine you would agree to the later. This isn't like a text editor where "okay it got nuked but I can still open my files in something like nano, easy". This is possibly a portion of your wealth we are talking about here.
Rant over 😛
