Thanks for pointing that out. Having had a career developing commercial software, I understand that expectations need to be lower for any beta version of a product than for a release version. And as I've mentioned, Thunderbird has served me well for more than 20 years, so it's not as if I actually need these new features in Vivaldi right now. So I can be very patient and wait to see them working at some time in the future.

It's just because Vivaldi has announced that these features are here now, and their documentation describes how to enable them and how to access them (none of which worked here), and comments in the forum led me to believe that others had succeeded in getting them to work, that my expectations were perhaps a bit higher than they should have been.

    Indeed, that option was checked automatically when I selected the "Loaded" version in the Welcome dialog. And being able to create two email accounts and add seven news feeds in the Settings confirmed that they should have been configured and enabled.

    I got Mail working (for some version of "working") eventually, but still haven't found a work-around that would display the Feeds. What enabled Mail has not worked here for enabling Feeds.

            Thanks, but Thunderbird handles feeds very well, and I'm already using that. I'm already using Vivaldi, too, which is the only reason I'm somewhat interested in their feed handling.

              Indeed. That's why I've spent so much time with it ... others seemed to have no problem with it. I'm still thinking it might have something to do with the DE.

                  WetGeek The DE is going to have pretty much nothing to do with the application in most cases, Vivaldi especially. It is separated enough from the stack, being based on Chromium, leveraging web technologies instead of any system libraries (beyond what Chromium would link against), and likely leveraging their own atom / RSS parser (I've written one in the past and the Atom / RSS specs are braindead simple to implement).

                  Just in case, I tried it under GNOME Shell, and it works fine there too (just as it does under Budgie). Dunno if you use either of them 🤷

                      Thanks for taking a look at that. The DE was the last thing that occurred to me as the possible root cause, and you've pretty much eliminated that. I'm running this on a very standard Dell laptop, on Plasma, and can't think of anything else to check.

                      Vivaldi is installed from the repository, the "Loaded" version was selected, in the Settings not only was Feeds available, but I configured and saved seven of them with no issues. Then I went through all the steps that finally enabled me to access Mail, but none of that worked for Feeds.

                      I don't know what else to try, so I'm just going to chill until a new version is in the repo. Thanks again for your input.

                        It seems like you may have to wait for Friday's push to the repo to get a fix on this. You may want to consider downloading vivaldi-snapshot and testing the Feeds, Calendar and Mail there. I have vivaldi-stable set up for browsing and vivaldi-snapshot set up as an email client.

                        I started using Vivaldi in late 2015 and had to wait all those years for M3 (Feeds, Mail, Calendar) to get released.. It was a big deal when it was finally pushed out as a Beta feature on the snapshot. It turns Vivaldi into something similar to SeaMonkey (if you are familiar with Mozilla's former Browser+Mail+Feeds project.)

                        I have both versions of the browser installed. They are clearly marked in the Applications as Vivaldi & Viavldi (snapshot) and they have different colored icons in the Icon Taskbar. I have been busy and haven't gotten to test or use the features as much as I would like but I am looking forward to digging down into the Vivaldi 4 release soon.

                        I was very disappointed because I couldn't login my Google accounts to the Vivaldi Mail service. It was entirely an issue with Google unfairly targeting the Vivaldi browser and refusing to allow the app to serve more than 100 connections at any one time.

                        Jon von Tetzchner is a big proponent of antitrust lawsuits and the breaking up of Big Tech and Google does it's very best to stick it to the little guy whenever possible. I haven't tried in quite a while but if you cannot log in to a Google Mail account that is why.

                        PS: Completely unrelated sidenote.. I turned off anything related to Google months ago and completely forgot about doing that. If you turn off Crypto Tokenyou won't be able login to your Google account. Crypto Token is an authentication standard of some kind related to FIDO. Just thought you might like to know about that!

                          Yeah, but no worries. Having Mail and Feeds built into a browser that I'm already using would be convenient, but the Mail is considerably underpowered at this point, which means I'd continue using Thunderbird for the foreseeable future anyway, and TB also does a fine job with feeds. I'll continue checking Vivaldi as new versions arrive.

                              Thank you! Your post gave me the clue that allowed me to find the Feeds UI on Vivaldi. Nowhere else had I seen an instruction to start the Mail application first, and then search for Feeds there. Mail, Calendar, and Feeds are always treated as if they are three different features, and I'd always been trying to access Feeds as such.

                              Incidentally, I found out why I could never access Feeds. It turns out that Mail is accessible in only one instance of Vivaldi at a time, and I typically have at least two, and sometimes three, open at one time in separate workspaces. It's how I arrange my workflow, as Vivaldi is the only browser I use.

                              I agree with you that feeds need to be displayed in separate folders, I have 7 feeds defined, and although message names are prefaced by the account they're from, the messages are interspersed in a single list. That makes sense now, because when I tried out the Mail feature, I added two of my accounts, and those messages were likewise not separated as to the account they came from.

                              If this is just a beta issue, I'm sure it will be fixed. If, however, it's by design, then I see little hope that many will adopt Vivaldi (which I love, otherwise) as their feed reader. Or as their mail reader, unless they have a single email account (and want all of their messages dumped into a single folder).

                              I'm betting on the former, and I'm pretty sure, based on the quality of Vivaldi as a browser, that this issue will be solved while it's still in beta.

                              I've already spoken to their team about integrating the Feeds into the New Tab page (or at least in a Feeds page that looks like a New Tab) that allows for scrolling.

                              The reason your Mail is doing that btw is because it's acting like a Unified Inbox. I dont know how to switch it..

                                Just another beta issue, I'm sure. A single list is a lot easier to code and populate than a list-within-a-list, which would be needed in order to represent messages inside folders inside accounts. I'm sure they'll eventually get it right. If not, two of their three new features will be infrequently used.
