I'm not sure what caused the issue, suddenly I couldn't lock my screen, neither with the shortcut(Super + L) nor via the applet. But Automatic Screen Lock works 30 seconds after Blank Screen.....

So I ran journalctl -f and then pressed <Super> + L
Then I get an error saying
Couldn't lock screen: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.Shell.ScreenShield was not provided by any .service files

I have no idea what to do, tried googling multiple ways and never got a solution 🙁

    1. Is this on Budgie or GNOME Shell?
    2. If you are using Budgie, can you check if budgie-screensaver is running by doing ps -aux | grep 'budgie-screensaver'?
    3. If you are using Budgie, do you also have GNOME Shell + GDM installed? This will negatively impact the ability to reliably lock the screen, despite various measures I implemented in budgie-screensaver to kill off the gjs gnome shell process.

Yes it is running when I checked

Oh I never knew that, I have installed both GNOME shell and GDM...maybe that's what causing the issue, It seems the issue came after a recent big update (I'm not sure), Because I had installed Gnome for about 6 months and never had any lock screen issues...

Thanks Josh, imma uninstall Gnome and see

bsucker98 Yea it is the result of a change they made in GNOME Shell 40 unfortunately. If you uninstall gnome-shell and GDM, and install lightdm + slick-greeter, you should be able to lock your screen again, at the very least through the User Indicator applet. Not sure about the automatic screen lock though or shortcut though, I honestly use neither.

Aha now it all works nicely...not an issue, for some reason still after removing Gnome, it shows as an option to choose from in slick greeter 😄
