I don't use VMware products, so I can't imagine what is causing your problem, but I thought I'd point out that Oracle's VirtualBox runs all the Solus editions (and everything else I've tried) without any drama at all. And it's free, even for commercial use. While distro-hopping before I found Solus, I'd tried more than 30 other distros and DEs by creating VMs for them, using VirtualBox. Currently I run Windows 10 VMs on two of my Solus machines, for access to a couple of applications that are important to me, but are not available for Linux.
I just thought I'd mention what works so well for me. You could probably install VirtualBox from the Solus repository and create the VM you need in less time than it would take to debug your VMware issue. And I don't know this for sure, but given the number of different virtual drive formats it will create, I strongly suspect that VirtualBox might even run your VMware virtual machines, or possibly you could create a VirtualBox VM and assign your VMware virtual drive to it. Perhaps there's someone here who could confirm that?
