Anyone on Solus with a Minimal Window Manager? Which ones?

Ah, so getting to a TTY interface is the same as on Linux. I thought of that, but then decided it probably wouldn't work. And, as it turns out, I wouldn't have known about the "wheel" group anyway, so it would not have helped me after all.

As soon as I get through with ripping some DVDs to the NAS, I'll reload the Midnight SSD and implement your suggestions.

Thanks, but I've known how permissions work for around 35 years or so. What I didn't know about was the "wheel" group. Also didn't know that sudo is now doas on OpenBSD.

I have a feeling that I'm almost there. Has FreeBSD changed the useradd command, as they did with sudo? Do you know what it might be now? When I try to add myself as an ordinary user with that command, I get the error message useradd: Command not found. So I still can't get anywhere with MidnightBSD.

And I still can't. I used the MidnightBSD Pakage Manager to try to install Firefox, because I didn't like Midori at all, and it's not compatible with the LastPass extension, so I would't have been able to log on to anything anyway. The package manager listed Firefox as an available package, but when I selected it and clicked on Add Package, it just closed and did nothing. After four more tries, I gave up on it.

My lust for distro adventure has been well satisfied for the foreseeable future. I'm going to recycle the USB key that I used for this mess, and the SSD as well.

Thank goodness for Linux, and especially Solus. I can't understand why anyone would want to use anything else.

Yeah. I think that's the only one I didn't try. No idea why they change timeless Unix commands like sudo and useradd.

WetGeek That is my timeless complaint. If it ain't broken, why fix it? People are justifying their paycheck by constant reinvention. 😆

If I actually bet on myself I'd of won...I'm finding Nomad effortless to a point. It's more GUI and less terminal. Added me to wheel via GUI. No doas, it uses sudo, I will have to append config files to dial in customization later. Customization real limited. What am I missing? I am having a Linux experience tonight, not the old school tooth-pulling unix experience they keep promising me. But it's been an interesting 3 hours. Easy persistent usb install. Intriguing. I know I'm just dipping toes in so we will see how this hobby goes. Does not detect printer or fat-formatted usb which worries me, but baby steps. I have not found system monitor or its terminal equivalent so I cannot see GB footprint. But the openbox menu is cool if half the menu worked. Maybe you are right: terminal-driven? GUI is just window dressing? I will have to go more terminal/less gui to explore methinks.

brent I'm glad you're having a good time of it. I think Solus simply has me spoiled. Solus is like a fine 21-year scotch, compared with Johnny Walker Red.

Every simple achievement was a big win. Like having sound, playing a video, getting a simple hp2020 usb printer to work. Nothing came working out of the box. The BSDs are mostly designed for research and servers. Only recently efforts are being made (by some external groups/persons) to add desktop or gui functionality, and it shows.

Yeah----this is pretty much it, what you said. The little victories. I'll monkey with it when there's time. I don't hate it, so that's a start. Thanks for the-df -h tip.

Probably never. I don't even see a linux distro I'd call runner up to Solus.

Agreed with @WetGeek , after using a well-bred Linux os like Solus, it is hard to find satisfaction elsewhere. Regardless, I use df -h and top or htop no matter where I am to check my system and memory usage.
In my opinion, it will be quite a while, or never (?), for BSD desktops to catch up to likes of Solus.

brent @elfprince @WetGeek love how you all are so appreciative toward Solus (despite this being a Solus forum). I've had it installed alongside Fedora over a year now now, and been struggling to choose which one to main (often going w/ Fedora). Good news is I've narrowed the vast universe of Linux distros down to these two, but curious to hear your thoughts on why/how you landed on Solus and why you feel it's a tier above other distros? : )

Forgot to add, that it is always advised in BSD forums to choose hardware that is compatible with BSD, so that they can work together. Once that is done, things are not bad. But the gui part is not mature yet. Many people do use a BSD as desktop and they are happy. It can be configured, but the effort to get there can be daunting. A good challenge on the side perhaps. 😀

elfprince yeah, sorry didn't want to hijack this thread but since it seemed to be going off-track with BSD, thought why not? lol I think there's a few other related posts on this forum already but was particularly interested in the views from ppl in this thread given the more technical discussion going on here.
