  • Help w/ Install - "Failed to update bootloader configuration"

Ok, so here's what I did:

  • Downloaded new Solus Budgie 4.2 iso
  • Created bootable USB with Etcher
  • Booted into live iso
  • Used Gparted to delete my old Solus 4.1 partition (was having some performance issues so, why not try starting fresh?)
  • Created new ex4 partition in place of prior one
  • Confirmed I was in EFI with 'ls /sys/firmware/efi'
  • Started installation process
  • All was going well...
  • And then....

Installation Failed
Failed to update bootloader configuration

Now I come here after duck duck go'ing this error and not being able to find a solution.. hoping someone here can help : )

Note: Not sure this matters, but I currently have both Fedora and W10 installed and running on this same harddrive (same setup as was working before with Solus 4.1).

Edit: one more thing to add, I did not create a new boot/esp partition for this, I just let the installer choose my existing FAT32 ESP partition (1gb) that had my old Solus boot (I removed these files before the install) + W10 + Fedora.

UPDATE: I got the install to work!

How? I created a new FAT32 partition, gave it the boot and efi flags, then used that for the bootloader installation.

This brings me to my next problem though... where's the 'Linux Boot Loader' ??

FINAL UPDATE [literally like 2 mins later]: I was able to add the Linux Boot Loader with the following command. I'm now booted into a fresh install of Budgie on Solus 4.2. I've also consolidated my boot partitions so everything is back on the original one. And all seems to be working fine. I'll leave these posts up in case they help anyone else troubleshoot similar install issues in the future.

sudo efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda1 -p 1 -l "\EFI\systemd\systemd-bootx64.efi" -L "Linux Boot Manager"

h3o And all seems to be working fine.

Congratulations on figuring it out, finally. When I have to do something like that, it always feels like a great victory!

h3o Hi. I've te same problem you had. Recently I configured my pc in EFI mode (before I had Bios Legacy -CMD enabled)...so I formatted my disk with GPT partition table and created ESP flag as /boot/efi and "boot" and now I've installed Windows10, Manjaro and OpenSuse and all work's fine.

I tried to install Solus OS 4.3 and all works fine but in the end of installation process Solus say's me that "Failed to update bootloader" as in your case. I don't understand what you did and how you've installed Bootloader in /dev/sda1 . My ESP is a /dev/sda1 too and have 1GB too.

gianni3ita As a passerby I noticed you mimicked @h3o's his/her actions after he/she updated second post with no success on your part. Your circumstances seemed the same.
But it was the list/steps they took in the first post that led them there. Re-read it some more, especially "Edit: one more thing to add,"---I don't know why you can't install precisely, but I but it seems related to this sequence. Wish I knew more.

Thanks. Yes we have the same problem and I don't know why. Sorry for my english...if you speak italian or spanish Will be great jaja

Tu solucion me funciono para instalar Solus Budgie 4.4. Por lo menos para instalarlo. Ya que aun no verifique tu segundo paso que es el Linux Boot Manager. Pero ahora veo que tal.

    Translated:
Your solution worked for me to install Solus Budgie 4.4. At least to install it. Since I haven't verified your second step yet, which is the Linux Boot Manager. But I'll see how it is.
