Solus installer stuck at "Examining local storage devices"

Few weeks ago, I installed Solus budgie but it wasn't really a easiest thing to do. Installer kept getting stuck at "Examining local storage devices", so I googled it, and to my surprise, I found out that this was a common problem for people. But there really wasn't any solution to this bug. "Just close the installer, and try again, worked for me" said one guy, so I did, in fact I kept doing it like 99 times while watching Brooklyn 99, until it just randomly did get past that part and I was able to finally finish my install.

Now, it turned out that budgie wasn't for me and I wanted to try good old KDE. And I was wondering if I would still get this problem, and sure enough, I was once again screaming at my screen because the damn installer wouldn't get past that part. I don't have patience for going through all that again so now I just have to deal with budgie.

Whats the deal with this installer?

My condolences, for sure. It's hard to imagine someone needing to settle for Budgie!

I don't know. I ran into the "Examining local storage devices" hang yesterday doing a "wipe everything" fresh install of Solus Budgie 4.2 on a Dell Latitude 7280. I booted to the USB and installed again, and everything went smoothly and Solus runs flawlessly.

The thing I can't explain is that I've done a "wipe everything" fresh install of Solus any number of times on that laptop in the last few years without a hitch.

Prompted by your post, I did my own internet search. I didn't do an extensive search, but the boards lit up with "Examining local storage devices" hangs relating to Solus installation, while there are only a few, sporadic mentions of the issue with other Linux distros (e.g. a Fedora alpha in 2011). The "Examining local storage devices" hang seems to be a Solus issue, and from what I can tell from reading the boards, might be related to partitioning issues. I can see that in an attempted dual-boot installation, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me in the context of a "wipe everything, install only Solus" installation.

But in all seriousness, I think I just accidentally fixed all my budgie problems; previously budgie kept freezing on me constantly but after I switched my panels position from right side of the screen, to the bottom of the screen, everything seems to be working just fine.

So I guess it's all good now, but damn I was mad for a second, so I'm sorry for my ranting. I still would prefer KDE, but at least I can now use my computer

Yeah, I know. After all, it's all Solus, right? I thought my sense of humor would be obvious even without a smiley face. At least, he'll be settling for the most popular Solus DE, by far.

Suspikuutti Well, we all have those moments of rant or the feeling of it, with one or other distribution, sometimes. No problem. It can be frustrating, no matter what OS. Hopefully you'll be fine with your computer.

Where dev says "Known bug. Won't be fixed until the installer rewrite.". I hope this rewrite happens soon. I did have patience for this, but I can't blame people who try installing solus, get this error, and just give up on it. It's quite infuriating

Thanks for digging this out and reporting it. It's good that the devs know about the issue and plan to fix it. I hope it is soon, too.

I get that. Solus installation has enough quirks as it is, without this too.

If my experience means anything, though, the bug is sporadic and probably not all that common. I use the Latitude 7280 as a test machine, so I frequently install this-or-that OS on it (always a "delete partitions, install as sole OS" installation no matter what OS I'm installing), and I never ran into the issue until yesterday, coming off Windows 10 to Solus Budgie. I've done a Win10 to Solus install on that laptop a dozen times in the last couple of years without a hitch. I have no idea what triggered it this time.

If you read enough of those threads there's other variables, too. Maybe your target install destination not as healthy as you think it is. Maybe target install destination not formatted. Live USB stick not in great shape to begin with. Live USB does not have an .iso burned the Solus-reccomened way. Try try again.

It's happened to me a couple times, too. You know how I always get over the hump? Persistence. Isolate the last 3 sentences of my paragraph above. Thats usually the reasons for me. Re-approaching the install and/or re-approaching it differently. Success rate=100%.

Most installs are eazy-peazy, some are battles, agreed.

elfprince I've used this command having no idea what it did.
If I did this to a document in the terminal I'd have to cd or /path/to/file, right? Want to try this.
