Goodbye Budgie.....

So.......I made a giant rookie mistake today. I've got two drives installed in my machine, an M.2 SSD for my main OS, and a SATA SSD for extra storage space, backups, and anything else. Well, I decided I would install Garuda KDE Dr460nized on the SATA drive and follow along with the Linux For Everyone community challenge. I loved it! It was visually amazing, and it was lightweight, and fast! I thought, lets try Lubuntu, and Kubuntu, and Solus KDE! All is going well.....then.....installing Solus KDE something went wrong. I was sure I had selected the SATA drive....I was sure I selected install alongside Ubuntu......but I rebooted to my main drive.....and hello Plasma. Budgie is nowhere to be found.....It shows it adjust the partition size on my other disk.....but where's my beloved Budgie?!

I could just reinstall and restore from backup right? Wrong......I wiped my backups to start installing multiple distros. I told myself I'd free up a couple hundred gigs for backup and set it up again, but I didn't. I'm going to try and flip this to a positive. I'm going to try and use it as a learning experience to dive fully into KDE. I like KDE connect......but really.....I just want to cry a little.....

I know that 'kid-in-a-candy-store' foss feeling, you described it well.
Your second paragraph describes the subsequent hangover very well, too. There is always a consequence (break something or nuke something) for me, too, long at the candy store.

Solarmass I've already burned the 4.2 iso to a usb drive, but since I have to start from scratch anyway, I'm going to give Plasma a serious go.

So far, trying to get everything back to status quo, it's not as easy for initial setup as Budgie was.

Solarmass yes.....the Budgie 4.2 iso. I overwrote the Plasma iso that got me in this situation.

tomscharbach I've yet to find anything that would lure me away from Solus Budgie. Budgie and I were a match made in heaven, and none of the non-Solus Budgie distros hold a candle to Solus Budgie in terms of simplicity, minimalism and stability.

Could not have said it better. I tried to appreciate some other distros, honestly, but not even close.

So Update, I thought it was strange that everything shows partitioned correctly on my drives, it even shows where it created the 4th partition for Solus Plasma and left my main drive unchanged. So still being the Linux newbie that I am and not knowing any better, I assumed Budgie was gone. Then it hit me, what it if just set a boot flag on the main drive, soooo smash the Esc key on startup, and low and behold there are two Solus 4.2 entries. I picked the one that was not highlighted by default and there's my Budgie!!!!! Exactly as it was!

Now I need to figure how to make it my default boot again.....

Brucehankins You can use grub-customizer if you use Legacy Boot.

algent I'm using EFI boot. I want to keep Plasma around on the other drive, and have it set so I have to go into the firmware/boot interface to boot to Plasma, like any other OS on the secondary drive.

After the usual misadventures, I now explore different distros in Gnome Boxes when the "kid in a candy store" temptation gets the better of me. Easy to do and no hassles so far, although a few distros (Clear Linux, for example) don't work in a virtual environment.

I've yet to find anything that would lure me away from Solus Budgie. Budgie and I were a match made in heaven, and none of the non-Solus Budgie distros hold a candle to Solus Budgie in terms of simplicity, minimalism and stability.

That sounds like the experiment I ran over the course of several years. I had used openSUSE the longest previously, but I'd had it for so long I began to wonder what else was on offer. Maybe there was a newer distro that I should try?

Since I'm retired, and didn't actually need any particular setup, I downloaded a lot of distros that sounded interesting to me, and used each of them exclusively for a while. I posted a screenshot of my ISOs share a while back, and it included 32 distributions, if I recall correctly.

When I tried Solus 3.999, that ended my distro hopping. Solus has only gotten better with each update since then.

Then I liked Unity (yes, I was the one) and then I tried Cinnamon, which is nice, but also kind of unfinished and heavier than it could be.

KDE never got me. That is a completely different world to me... Tried it a couple of times and always disliked it a lot.

I then chose Solus Budgie, because it is stable and simply runs. I don't have to fix Linux problems once in a while. It has fewer settings than others but that also means, you don't have to set up that much.
Still using Solus Budgie pretty much in default setup, except for the panel, which went left here. I need vertical space for coding.

WetGeek I remember that picture. I've tried the big boys of ubu/deb/rhel/arch stripes, too. I am comfortable with the red hat language. always wanted to try the bsd experience. I'm sure my linux trajectory would be completely different if one stuck with me. 3.999 and before had some kinks, didn't they🙂? Your last sentence nails it.

Let me put it this way, at least for me. W98 was fine, XP fine, W7 fine...day in/day out...merely adeqaute...I NEVER was excited and stoked to boot and use and work, like I am with Budgie, for sure. Hasn't lost that (celtic) magic.

JoshStrobl That was the point when I left the main Ubuntu. No official Unity support.

And I used Fedora with GNOME, OpenSUSE GNOME/KDE, Manjaro XFCE, plain Arch setup for the masochist kicks, Mint, and some others before and after too (who knows what all), PopOS (seemed interesting) as last one before this gem of a Solus.

God knows why, there was once a VERY short Solaris time too...hell knows why, I must have been in a stupid week period...
