I have been using Solus for a while now and was quite satisfied with it. But I recently decided to change my older GTX 950 to a RX 580 8gb for various reasons. After I had set it up successfully, I booted up the machine to see if it was working as expected. I did not get me to the login screen but it went straight to a white/pink screen. I managed to get into the tty and tried this already:

  • reinstall amd-Xorg drivers
  • changed grub boot parameters to "nomodeset" and "xforcevesa"
  • changed the xorg config
    Other distros (Ubuntu, Manjaro) run fine with this setup from a Live-USB and i didn't find any further information on this specific problem. Also a Solus 4 Live-USB gave me a quite similar result.

Hardware:

  • CPU: Intel I7 4790
  • GPU: Sapphire RX 580 8gb
  • 16 GB RAM
    Also running Solus 4 Budgie with Kernel 4.19

Thank you for your help.

It really shouldn't require nomodeset (imo), in fact it shouldn't require any params I don't think.
If the live cd works, you could just reinstall.
Or you could remove all parameters related to nvidia video cards from the boot, delete the xorg config and see it it just runs.
I'm running a rx590, and checked my boot parameters and indeed there are some there (copying)
radeon.si_support=0 radeon.c
ik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1
I thought there weren't...but we're probably similar enough for those to work on yours?

    dbarron I have radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1 and I'm using RX 580

    dbarron Sorry, I did not write that down quite well. With "Similar Result", I wanted to say something more like "The same result as the installed Solus". Thanks for your reply anyway; going to try it out now.

    It worked out of the box for me after I installed the OS and I use the same GPU.

    Did you have the nvidia proprietary drivers installed?

      Justin Yes I did. Do you think it's related to them still being installed?

      Justin I removed all nvidia divers but sadly this didn't fix it. Any other ideas. I think I can narrow down the problem to the display manager since this also won't start "correctly". Also if that helps, I got Solus 3 Live kind of working with the desktop partly being white but this has been addressed on reddit already.

        25 days later

        hi guys so i just installed Radeon 290x after i was on Intel integrated GPU since i first installed Solus OS in my PC and now after clicking Enter at dual boot manu i see only black screen with - blinking at the top corner,
        so i have entered command lines that are provided by [deleted] in Grub and it gave me splash screen
        where it's checking and giving me "OK" signs in green but it will still give me black screen with - blinking at the top left corner, also in Grub lines i see this line available radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1 but no use.

        can anyone kindly help me on this ?
