Solus 4.2 Released

Sorry, these are the four files I downloaded from getsol.us this morning as regular HTTP downloads. I only remembered the unconfirmed part of the file extensions:

I haven't tried burning any of them to a USB drive yet ... thought I'd ask about them first. With very few active seeders, my torrent downloads are going very slowly. I don't know whether those will result .ISO files or the above "unconfirmed" ones.

EDIT: It's possible this was caused by a bug in Chrome, which I used for these downloads because my customary browser, Vivaldi, seems to be a lot slower downloading large files. Other than that, I don't normally use Chrome for anything.

I'm testing that theory now, downloading them again using Firefox on a different computer. More Solus users are apparently awake by now, because the downloads are very slow. I'll let you know what I find out when one of them is finished.

Those are partial downloads. When a download is completed successfully they go away. If it fails, they can remain.

The only purpose they MAY server now is to resume a failed download.

Ah, yes... I did know about those, but haven't used Chrome in quite a while. They were present in my /Downloads share for quite a while before I closed Chrome. I suspect that most of the download activity stopped when word of the new version reached the main body of Solus fans.

I''m now assuming that the files generated by processing the torrents will be fine.

It's just a guess, but I think Vivaldi (and other Chromium derivatives?) might be writing directly to the /Downloads/Linux/ share on my NAS, whereas Chrome might be buffering the downloads in these partial files, and writing them to the NAS when the downloads are finished. That buffering might be the difference in their speeds.

Okay, my Chrome confusion has been resolved. Transmission is running on the server and seeding all four .ISO files.

By the way, IMHO using the torrents for download these huge files is the best download method. It's not subject to mysterious timeouts that stop an HTTP download in its tracks.

It is interesting to watch the torrents' being processed. There were far more seeders for Budgie than the other DEs, which confirms my belief that it's by far more popular (approx. 3:1 among these files) than any of the other DEs.

nvidia 3080 - cannot boot to installer. Same exact issue as Solus 4.1: Nouveau unidentified device error 🙁 I was so looking forward to installing Solus

gpioneer90 Basic support for the 3000 series of Nvidia cards should come with kernel 5.12 if I'm not mistaken

Staudey That's very untrue. I've had it working just fine on 5.8 and 5.9 on other distros
5.12 may be scheduled to bring native support in the kernel, but it still works just fine on 5.8 (or 5.9) and above on some other distros, and especially with nVidia drivers

gpioneer90 I just meant that basic support in the kernel will come with 5.12. Not sure if other distros bundle the nvidia driver on their ISOs, but that's something that we can't do afaik. Not sure if you can boot it somehow anyway.
Of course it works fine on an installed system with the current nvidia driver.
edit: It's actually 5.11, I just researched

Staudey Why is that something Solus can't do? And that's interesting because nVidia 460 driver is specifically mentioned in the change log for 4.2.

So are nVidia series 3xxx users officially left without being able to install/use Solus until the next release?

gpioneer90 It's mentioned in the package changelog because we ship the modaliases as a separate sub-package that doesn't require the proprietary drivers themselves, which allow the hardware driver tool to be able to determine what driver it should install.

Mode-setting for the 30 series just landed in 5.11-rc4 per https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-5.11-rc4-Released. We're on 5.10.12. Any support in other operating systems is the likely the result of them shipping the proprietary driver, which is 1) going to force enable NVIDIA in optimus scenarios 2) be a legal gray area 3) introduce potential regressions for NVIDIA hardware and fallbacks to nouveau.

We did not advertise 30-series support in the announcement because it really doesn't exist yet.

That is correct. We didn't advertise said support, it shouldn't be expected at that point. Not our fault NVIDIA has taken as long as they have to get mode-setting into the kernel, they could've done it before 5.10.

gpioneer90 We aren't planning a 4.2.x release. It would be a 4.3 release.
