Remote access on Solus machine

Hey guys,

Since things seem to work fine with Solus, I decided to get rid of Windows on my media server, too. So I have just installed Solus on it. What a lovely feeling to kick MS from each and every machine step by step! ;-)

The good news is that everything seems to work flawlessly on it. There is no hibernation/suspend problem as on my Intel NUC and the speed seems to be a little better than with Win10 as well (it is only a little Acer Revo Cube with a weak Celeron CPU).

The bad news is that I cannot access my little server any more via remmina (this was absolutely no problem running Win10 on it). But I guess there is just something wrong with permissions or so...

Can you tell me what I have to do so that I can access Solus via remmina (using RDP, VNC or whatever)?

Maybe good to know: I only installed Remmina on my workstation, not on my little media server. So maybe the problem is not only missing permissions but also missing packages or so...?

PS: I already changed the server's IP address to the same static IP which I used for my former Windows machine. I did not create any new users or so, since I want to access my server with full admin permissions.

Can you be more specific? I.E. Are you receiving an error from Remmina? Does the connection just time out?

I just found out that Solus does not seem to save my settings for sharing (which might be needed for enabling RDP or VNC connections, right?)!
When I tick the button "sharing" in the settings menu, it always goes back to disabled after closing the window or switching to other settings.

PS: There is no option for "screen sharing" any more! When I tried to enable sharing first time, there was an option for screen sharing below. This one is not shown any more.

PALADIN, I had remmina working flawlessly for a long time, but lately a bug has arisen. This is my workaround, and, as far as I can make out, why it's happening in the first place:

Remmina Issue

It is a bug in the current version of freerdp
Work around is to uninstall Remmina and use flatpak version until it is updated

I really have don't have a lot of knowledge about Linux in general and Solus especially, but are you sure that the issue has to do with Remmina?

I have read threads and instructions for a few hours now and there seems to be a huge problem with Solus and screen sharing in general. I understood that there should be some files which have to do with "/usr/lib/vino/vino-server" - since no commands seem to work, I guess there is no vino server installed at all and this also might be the reason why the "sharing" button (under settings) cannot be switched on (which is true for both of my Solus computers).

Nevertheless, I would like to give your troubleshooting a try, of course! Could you please tell me how to install this "flatpak version"? I don't even know what flatpak is... ;-)

General usage
After you set up flatpak, to install Remmina flatpak install flathub org.remmina.Remmina
Reboot and you should be good to go.

Since Solus started freezing on my server (even after new installations), I deleted it and switched to Debian Cinnomon instead. I hope that I will be able to do everything I need with Debian, too. On my desktop I will stick with Solus, since it is much more convenient and logical for former Windows users.

Debian seems to run with less problems on my server (maybe there are some hardware issues), but it is a pain in the a... to configure it compared to Solus! At the moment, I cannot even find a button to allow remote control, there seems to be no easy to use "Software Center" (or anything like that) etc, etc.

PALADIN Debian should have what you need, but it's packages can be pretty old sometimes and there may be some issues there. Same goes for SUSE, unless you go for the testing branch (Tumbleweed).

You could try Solus Mate, the footprint is slightly lighter than Budgie and it may perform better in your use case.

Debian became even worse after some hours of festing. It did not freeze as Solus did, but configuring it was a pure nightmare. I tried KDE and Cinnamon, and both was a crap! Finally, after wasting a whole day with this sh..., I came back to god damn Windows. I hate it, but it works - at least until some MS idiots roll out their updates that ruin everything again. I found out that no windows version (expect Win98SE and Win7 which were really good) lasted longer than 1/2 to 1 year before it had to be reinstalled. But since Solus started freezing just after a few reboots, I think this is still the "best" option to choose. I am so pissed about wastig a whole day (!) and now coming back to bloody Windows!

PS: Solus is really nice, but it does not seem to work flawlessly with different hardware. It works mostly on my Intel Nuc (except hibernation/suspend), but it is a pain running it on my Acer Revo Cube. Again, I come to the conclusion that Linux (still) is for tinkerers and experts, not (yet) for normal "stupid" users. :-(
