In classical music, I'd recommend listening to Franz Liszt's 1st piano concerto, performed by the Argentinian-Swiss pianist Martha Argerich with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado. This 1968 recording has not aged a bit, and is still rightly regarded as an authority, where its poetic moments alternate with a jubilant atmosphere supported by top-flight performers!
But the new generation is not to be outdone: in 2014, listen to Chinese pianist Yuja Wang perform Serge Prokofiev's 1st concerto for piano and orchestra with Davies Symphony Hall conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas: she plays with breathtaking brio, and is also a young woman of her time, who embraces all its codes!
