Error in compiling ruby rvm

Hi, i am trying to install ruby v2.3 with rvm but when i run rvm install command, it fails on compiling. i tried uninstlling rvm and using rbenv but still failed on compilation phase. here is my rvm log

amirhosseinak20 I don't know about rvm (or what would be the cause of your error), but I was able to install ruby last week with rbenv (installed using the installer available on Git).

You didn't give any details about what caused the error with rbenv in your case, but I can tell you what I had to do. I already had the system.devel components installed, so I don't know if, or what particular packages, ruby install might be dependent on that. If you haven't them installed (or are not sure), simply run sudo eopkg it -c system.devel and you'll be good 😉

Afterwards, the only other dependency to install was the openssl-11-devel package. If your error with rbenv had anything to do with that, there are good chances this could solve the issue for you. It did in my case.

nathanpainchaud Thanks for your response. I must note that i have installed ruby v2.7, v2.6, v2.5, v2.4 but when i try to install v2.3 i face errors. i need to install 2.3 beacuase i am working on an old version of ruby on rails and it was developed with ruby v2.3.5.

amirhosseinak20 I admit the error message is pretty cryptic... That said, thanks for the additional details about your setup. I still think this is linked to openssl. When searching for fixes for my own problems, I saw somewhere that ruby<2.4 is not compatible with openssl (which most Linux distribution, Solus included, now ship with it). And since you had no problem with ruby version later than 2.3, it seems to be a solid hypothesis. A quick search for rbenv error uncommon found an issue on Mint similar to yours.

Looking through the repo, the info for openssl-devel states the following:

This is a legacy OpenSSL 1.0 series package. Building against this library is not supported and is only intended for legacy usecases or transitions between 1.0 series and 1.1.

Given this, I don't know how to help you to achieve your goal of building ruby 2.3.8. Given that this version is no longer even supported, I think your time might be better invested trying to migrate your project to a newer ruby/rails version, if at all possible.

nathanpainchaud Thanks for your comment, i can't migrate up the project because I'm not in the position that i can decide about project migration. so I think I must use vagrant or docker to use ruby 2.3 .
