This may not be what you want to hear, but the only way you'll know if it will work to your satisfaction is to install it and decide for yourself. Make a backup, if you think you'll ever want to return to what's on it now, and install Solus.
The general consensus here seems to be that the MATE DE is best for machines that are short on resources, but I've installed Budgie on a little Acer TravelMate that we take on trips, and it runs fine on it. But I'm not a "gamer," beyond Spider solitaire, Shisen-sho and Mahjongg. That's why you need to try for yourself and see whether it pleases you.
My daily laptop has an i7, and I don't consider it to be challenged in any way, but we may use our laptops differently. However, I can certify that it will run Solus MATE, Budgie, or Plasma editions quite well. But that's just my opinion.
EDIT: Another consideration ... if the laptop runs on a HDD, why not just set it aside and install an inexpensive SSD for Solus? That way, if you decide not to use Solus, you can simply swap the original disk back in, and you're back to its original configuration. No backup needed!
