Hello everybody!

I ask for help again, since I have only recently been a Linux user and am very satisfied with it on my main system, I decided to replace Windows 10 on my notebook too.

The notebook is really old but is still in great condition and the performance is acceptable for small or old games.
Alienware m17x R3
CPU: i7 840qm
GPU: Radeon Mobility Dual 5870

In any case, the GPU does not boost and is apparently only in a kind of battery mode.

Is there a chance to continue using my trusty Alienware with Solus despite the old age?

I would appreciate help.

Cheers

    Hans_Paul_Rodriguez I would appreciate help.

This may not be what you want to hear, but the only way you'll know if it will work to your satisfaction is to install it and decide for yourself. Make a backup, if you think you'll ever want to return to what's on it now, and install Solus.

The general consensus here seems to be that the MATE DE is best for machines that are short on resources, but I've installed Budgie on a little Acer TravelMate that we take on trips, and it runs fine on it. But I'm not a "gamer," beyond Spider solitaire, Shisen-sho and Mahjongg. That's why you need to try for yourself and see whether it pleases you.

My daily laptop has an i7, and I don't consider it to be challenged in any way, but we may use our laptops differently. However, I can certify that it will run Solus MATE, Budgie, or Plasma editions quite well. But that's just my opinion.

EDIT: Another consideration ... if the laptop runs on a HDD, why not just set it aside and install an inexpensive SSD for Solus? That way, if you decide not to use Solus, you can simply swap the original disk back in, and you're back to its original configuration. No backup needed!

    hello...
I think Solus will do a great job on this machine, btw It runs great on an Alienware 17R4 here 😃

Hello Rodriguez there is no 100% guarantee if everything is running I would test everything exactly in the live mode of Solus, and take your time with testing and checking whether the network card works, how about the graphics and and and

all is working now after using the right power supply with 240 watts 🙂 i took the wrong one with only 150 watts so that was impossible to boost to full speed 🙂
