I just moved from Ubuntu 20.x/Budgie to Solus because of snap. I've just read that Solus now uses snap as well. I hope this will be an optional software repo like flatpak, and I can decide whether to use it or not.

Yes, its optional. It is installed and ready to go out of the box but if you install a snap it is because you decided to.
I assume you are referring to Ubuntu's nonsense with sudo apt install chromium
actually installing a snap package instead without telling the user. Solus does not do that.
