I need to install Solus in a netbook with only 2 GB of ram but the owner knows nothing about computers so that needs a easy to use UI, I've found this:

Is it possible to achieve this in Solus?

Ram usage according to my tests:

According to this Gnome and KDE are the lightest

[deleted] what CPU does the netbook have? That will be almost as much of a limiting factor as the ram. If it's running 7 year old or less dual core @ 1.8 GHz or better it should be workable, but 2gb won't get you far. Guessing it's DDR3 12800, if it's easily replaceable it may be better to spend $40 and get them up to 8gb. My mini PC is basically an HP Stream Netbook, runs great with 8gb and a 1.7GHz Pentium. Before I upgraded from 4gb to 8gb, 5-6 browser tabs and my background applets could grind it to a halt basically. Now I can actually run Gimp and Darktable without issue.
Of course, I could have gotten rid of some of the applets that ate up ram, but another 4gb stick was $18....sooooo.....

Here's what mine is currently using in Budgie (with 5 Opera tabs, system monitor, weather show, and a handful of other applets running)

Brucehankins Thanks for the answer it has an Intel® Celeron(R) CPU N2840 @ 2.16GHz × 2 2gb ram ddr3 but the ram is not upgradable and cant afford a new pc even doesnt have a job now (corona time) you know 🙁

[deleted] yikes, ram not upgradable is rough. I hate to suggest anything other than Solus, but I'd take a serious look at Peppermint or Puppy Linux for the "snappiest" feeling. Peppermint uses LXDE and runs native web apps with ICE.

If I we're going to try Solus, I'd start with Mate and see how it preforms. I know Budgie will work, but it won't be a great experience. KDE relies a lot on the GPU and may not be great either. I haven't used that version of Solus though.

[deleted] try both see what works best for a few days.
Mate is known to be resource light similar to XFCE. Not sure about Gnome.

Side note, why is it pronounced Mah-Tay and Guh-nome?

Anything is possible, it's just a matter of how much you want to sacrifice to get it to those levels.

Because MATE does not take its name from the english word mate but rather a Spanish word? maté

GNOME Is because of its history. It used to be an acronym with the G standing for GNU which is a recursive acronym for GNU's Not Unix giving GNOME a hard G.

Got bored and got Budgie down to 331MB used (free -hm) in a VM.

[deleted] I stripped out a lot of apps and a few systemd services, removed wallpaper. I'll do up a bit of a guide on it soon.

So to summarize if I only pay attention to my screen captures which one is the desktop that requires more ram regardless cpu? Because looks like Mate is using more than Gnome in this case and I need to know because her laptop is constantly using swap 😅

              Solus 3 using only 241 mb and Solus 4.1 using 581 mb I don't understand 🙁

[deleted] SWAP is there to be used, it's not a bad thing. It's designed so that lesser used applications memory is pushed to disk to leave RAM free for more active tasks.

Justin Ok I thought that it became in use when the ram is almost full, and why Solus mate in the new version consumes more than the double of ram?
https://distrotest.net/Solus Have a look here and compare 4.1 vs 3 you will see the diference in ram as I show in the screen captures

[deleted] There are literally thousands of changes between Solus 3 and Solus 4.1. Any one or all of them could be contributing to higher memory usage. Software gets updated, usually adding more code for new features, better error checking, or improved performance. Along with these changes it's inevitable that RAM usage will increase.

Thank you guys, I ended up installing on it Solus Kde edition, I can confirm that is the lightest and fastest Solus edition with less ram usage, on gnome the netbook was always slow and the ram full now everything works perfect.

Literally the easiest way to reduce reported RAM is booting a VM with low screen resolution and software rendering. Boot on real hardware (or in a VM with proper acceleration [even llvmpipe]) and usage will shoot up with no other changes. Compare apples with apples.

This is a tad OT, but I thought I'd throw this in - it's not a Solus distro, but Q4OS is a really great-looking version of Linux for older hardware. Might be worth taking a look at:

                    https://q4os.org/

Also, perhaps I'm skimming too quickly, but can you clarify if you have 2GB or 200MB of RAM?!? If the latter, Q4OS can apparently run on systems with as little as 128MB of RAM, and is available in 32- or 64-bit architectures.
