Hello. When I boot up into Solus, i start iftop on my left monitor, then i turn on power for my modem, while i'm watching, i see an address for Google AdService that stays on top of the list, and if i block it with firewalld, it breaks the connection to the modem. Is this a normal thing that's included with the Steam and or Lutris? Is it directly linked to software i've installed fro the Solus Update center? How would I be rid of Google Adservice?
Much Love & Happy Holidays.

catfishsushi how would I be rid of Google Adservice?

It would be cool if someone could build something like uBlockOrigin or AdBlocker into the code that fetches updates. 😁

catfishsushi I can't see any items for google ad services in my iftop. Likely some piece of software you have installed.

Justin Why would the update fetcher need an adblock?

Because I just read a bunch of posts about problems after an update, and that was on my mind.

EDIT: ...and I was also joking, as evidence the smiley on the end. It wasn't meant to trigger anyone.

WetGeek No trigger, was just curious. As we have some very paranoid users in the Linux community.

FireFox extensions I use are: Privacy Badger, AdNausem, Site Bleacher, U-Block Origin. I have been considering a complete wipe & reinstall of Solus Plasma, but wanting to learn more of the "How To" of Solus and Networking, may help, but the complete wipe means several hours of setting OBS back up, re configuring alerts, etc, is a deterrent.

Diggis I was a Firefox user since I was a kid 15 years ago until a year ago when I realized that Firefox is going the wrong way putting ads by default and I felt that I wasn't safe, later I discover that Brave was created by a co-founder of Mozilla and Java script and is the only one that blocks all the miners I tested by default, even Firefox with addons can't so for now on I am only using Brave. I suggest you to search on the internet all the features that Brave brings by default to protect you.

[deleted] I don't know why you don't feel safe with an advertising system that respects your privacy and the can be disabled, especially when the aim of these things is to find alternate sources of incomes to become less financially dependent on Google. Firefox is the only serious browser that offers an alternative to blink/webkit based browsers. Monopolies are never good for freedom, just saying.
Unlike what you say, firefox does block crypto-miners by default, this without the need to use add-ons.

              kyrios firefox does block crypto-miners

And I've found out that it correctly passes location information to an application, if you enable that. Using YouTube TV to watch local stations, it correctly tells YouTube which set of local stations you want to watch.

Originally I thought only Google Chrome would do that, because I couldn't get it to work with other Chromium-derived browsers.

[deleted] from what i have understood brave is a great option for convincing friends and family to be a bit more security conscious. It's for those who want "out of the box" security and don't want to lose that convenient chrome experience. I've also heard the "Tor incognito" mode is something of a gimic.
perhaps i'm missing something but i'm still pretty sure that a toughened firefox is beating brave.
