Personally I think it's worth fighting for privacy and raise awareness of the users on this problematic. This is part of the digital education and many sane measures can be taken to limit the leakage of personal data. Human ones (common sense) and technical ones. This doesn't require lot of time to setup.
The most important rule to remember is : consider whatever you post online as public. You want to keep something private, don't put it on the internet, even in a private space. Dot.
Also the web is a place for sharing and exchanging. Even if you use tools that respects your privacy, your contacts may not and you have no control on that. You get rid of google? fine... are you going to stop mailing all your friends using gmail ? How could you prevent your friends to sync their contacts (containing your phone number and so on) on the cloud ?
Do you take your mobile phone with you when you get out ? Do you only use cash for payments ? Does your car has a GPS ? Do you have an abandonment for the public transports, etc. ? If so it is very easy to track you in the real world.
The question to ask yourself is against who do you want to protect your private data ?
