I'm new to Solus, love this distro with Budgie!
I use OneNote extensively to organize my personal thoughts and also for school. I take hand-written notes in OneNote, annotate PDFs and slides all the time using an iPad (formerly Surface Pro) by importing them into OneNote.

I use a PC with Solus and an iPad for class and note-taking (Goodnotes and Notability).

I know I can use OneNote on the iPad and just access those note using OneNote Web (which becomes slow). But I want to migrate to FOSS as much as possible, would it be doable? Worth the hassle?

I've searched the forums here and Joplin came up the closest. I don't have a Nextcloud so syncing would probably be via OneDrive.

Do you guys have recommendations, experiences, or a different workflow?

Axios Thanks. I actually just installed it via snap. Not sure I'll stick to it or switch to something FOSS.

And I'm not sure what's the difference bt

  • Snap
  • AppImage
  • NPM

their advantages and disadvantages?

UPDATE: searching further, there's Boost Note that was added in repos upon request (I think?) same idea as Joplin, but hasn't been updated since March 2019.

ultra99 AppImage is just an executable bundled with all its dependencies. it doesn't automatically create a .desktop file (i.e. the thing that makes it show up in the menu). there's no automatic updating- kind of like a Windows program.

Snap has better system integration and automatic updates, but it's not as integrated as a native package from the repositories. You can roll back to a previous version if an update isn't working for you, which is kinda handy.

NPM is a package manager for Javascript programs, and you can update/install with terminal commands.

You might be interested in the program Xournal++ (package name xournalpp in the Solus repo). I have been using it to annotate PDFs for lecture notes and for grading papers. I am also using it together with Simple Screen Recorder (package name simplescreenrecorder in the Solus repo) to make video lectures. I am using it with a Wacom Intuos Pro and have had no issues. It is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows. Here is a link to the GitHub page: https://github.com/xournalpp/xournalpp. I think it is also available as a Flatpak.

Zim might be an option. I've been using it for a couple weeks now. I'm not currently sync'n it though. I'm just using it in Solus on the desktop. It is in the software center if your interested.
