Right click anywhere on an empty area of the panel, i.e., not occupied by other applets
Popup menu will open
Select the "Add to Panel..." option; it's the first, the topmost one in the popup menu
"Add to Panel" dialog window will open:
Type in "menu" (without quotes) in the "Find an item to add to the panel" input field at the top right corner to narrower applets list
Select Compact Menu applet
Either drag the applet and drop it anywhere you wish on the panel, or click Add button to add it (usually at panel's right side)

just thanks. Yesterday I was trying other options and after switching the status bar from Solus to Gnome or Fedora the bar turned completely black without any icon and I couldn’t do nothing. So I installed Solus budgie.
I chose Mate because I read that was better to old hardware, and this is an old Toshiba laptop, but as I was already trying budgie on a vm in my MacBook, was less problematic.
