No Sound HDMI

Sadly, I'm not getting any sound via the HDMI cable. But I can get sound via the audio port.

I've tried switching between different HDMI cables and increasing the volume controls.

I've also tried adjusting options in the Control Panel > Sound, the PulseAudio Volume Control and the AlsaMixer.

Currently, I've installed Solus on my mini PC, the Gigabyte Brix Pro (GB-BXi7-4770R). It's a pretty old PC, released back in JAN 2014.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770R 3.90 GHz
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200
Audio: Realtek ALC269

Am I missing a sound setting somewhere?

Usually both the preinstalled sound settings and raven give you an option to change the output device. If you can change the output to hdmi and still hear no sound check your monitor settings (not on your pc, I mean the actual monitor) and check wether its muted maybe. Also, I suppose I'll throw this in here as well, confirm that the monitor model has speakers.

If you can't set the output to hdmi, I don't know what to do either

I can see the sound input levels moving when I use VLC Player or play Youtube clips on Firefox, however, I don't hear any sound.

I've also adjusted the volume to the max level which is 100. Typically, I watch television shows at volume 12.

I'm using a Samsung LED TV (UN32H6350AFXZA). It works fine for my PS4 console and other Windows 10 OS related devices.

It's unfortunate that I'm unable to download a "linux" sound driver for my Gigabyte Brix. It only supports Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Have you confirmed that the HDMI cable you're using has ever transmitted audio and not just video? A large percentage of monitors don't have speakers built-in, especially in corporations, so they have no need for audio wiring in their HDMI cables.

The first cable I tried to use with my TV was one of those. I had to look around for one that handled audio.

Yeah, it's the same cable used for other consoles and computers. I can hear audio just fine for those systems. Also, I've tried different HDMI cables in case this specific cable wasn't working properly.

Also, I've tried different HDMI ports on the television. And I've plugged into another television. I still don't hear any sound via the HDMI cable. I only hear sounds coming out of the audio port.

But I'm fairly certain, it's not an issue with trying out different HDMI cables, different monitors/televisions or adjusting volume settings. It's something software related that I'm missing out on. Maybe Realtek ALC269 and Solus (just the HDMI cable for sound) doesn't work well together? But everything else for Solus works very well. The graphics, ethernet, keyboard/mouse, scanner, etc. doesn't require any drivers or additional setup.

Since it works on other devices, and windows 10... and setting sound output to HDMI manually on pavucontrol(Pulseaudio volume control) doesn't work either.
You could try in a terminal aplay -l and see if your HDMI is detected.

If it doesn't work either, I believe it is not alsa or pulse fault, but maybe the GPU driver config, I mean, I don't really know, but the driver sends image and the sound via HDMI, so I think it sends information to pulseaudio... Please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know how these drivers really work.

Trying the terminal command aplay -l. But in the meantime, I'll just use a separate sound bar.

I think I found a Linux sound driver, however, I'm not sure how to install it. Unfortunately, the rar file only came with the alsa-driver-1.0. I'm not sure where to look for the other file.

Is this even going to work for Solus?

Unzip the driver source code.
tar jxvpf LinuxPkg_x.xxrcxx.tar.bz2
tar jxvpf alsa-driver-1.0.xx.tar.bz2
Config compile environment.
./configure

This will check your system which compile capabilities is.

If you want to compile the HDA driver part only, please follow below.
./configure --with-cards=had-intel

If you meet errors on this step, please see the bellowing.

I have noticed this as well.

Switching the sound device works if I move it to my laptop's built-in sound card but it stops working when I direct it to my HDMI connected display with speakers.

I've found that opening and closing my browser works (this has happened in both Chromium and Firefox browsers) although rarely I need to log out and log back in to get full access to my sound again.

Enter Menu and click on Sound settings.
In Sound settings you'll see tabs, click on the HARDWARE tab
In Hardware sound settings you will see PROFILE menu, click on it. It will bring you a list of sound Input and Output menus, mine works on the DIGITAL STEREO OUTPUT (hdmi) + ANALOG STEREO INPUT.
