Installing Custom Kernel

Justin I'm not sure I understand... I compiled 5.6.3 with the config from Solus; what's the "package.yml?" After compiling and installing the 5.6.3 kernel, nothing saw, well, anything...

moore-bryan Its updated to 5.6.4 in repo yesterday 😀. Friday you can update it else you clone and compile the package.

moore-bryan As @viyoriya mentioned it's available on unstable now. You were compiling for unstable it seems so you may as well just switch to unstable to test. I'd suggest joining #Solus-Dev IRC channel on Freenode to discuss the testing procedure.

Got it... I've always wondered about "changing" to the unstable branch; is it as easy as sudo eopkg ar Solus https://mirrors.rit.edu/solus/packages/unstable/eopkg-index.xml.xz?

Also, will I be unable to compile the 5.6.6 kernel, then?

Hi @moore-bryan , I think you have taken a difficult path. The problem of Wi-Fi in Linux is one of the most acute. My Wi-Fi didn’t work either, but it didn’t work permanently. Thanks to the solus forum, I found out that

you need to know the name of the chip
find the driver for github
using a simple script to compile everything
profit, everything worked

Thanks @George; already went down that route and discovered there's a kernel-related issue with not starting the firmware and/or starting it incorrectly.

So, compiling a kernel with the upstream patch or waiting for those merges are my only options.

Switching to "unstable" via sudo eopkg ar Solus https://packages.getsol.us/unstable/eopkg-index.xml.xz, which upgrades to the 5.6.4-152 kernel fixes everything.

So, the "solution" to this post—i.e., installing a custom kernel—is "although it's not impossible, there's no wiki or 'how-to' about it, so don't."

And it's my comfort with Debian/Ubuntu that was holding me back... "Muscle memory."

I believe I've found my "forever" distro in Solus, so it's time to break old habits.

The one thing I think Solus can still learn from a distro like Ubuntu is how responsive their forum is, but I believe as more users migrate to Solus that will improve.

moore-bryan The core team are more active in IRC than on the forums usually for Solus. Plus instant communication helps with diagnosing issues.

Definitely directly related to the size of the user base. When there are thousands of other users active at any given time you're going to get faster responses. Unfortunately we can't offer that as a service 🙂
