Which Solus desktop are you using?

Download the openvpn files, skip step 2 "Install and set up the VPN with Network Manager" & step 3 "Connect to the VPN": https://www.expressvpn.com/support/vpn-setup/manual-config-for-linux-ubuntu-with-openvpn/#download

Extract the files to where you want them, could be /etc/openvpn (you will have to create the folder).

In Solus Budgie you do this:
1) Left click on the network manager.
2) Hold the mouse over "VPN Connections" then click on "Configure VPN".
3) Click on "+", click on the drop down menu and choose "Import a saved VPN configuration", then click "Create".
4) Choose one of the openvpn files you downloaded, if you put them in /etc/openvpn you need to navigate there.
5) In the window that is now showing, under "Authentication" you need to enter "User name" & "Password", then click "Save".
7) Connect to your VPN by clicking on the network manager icon, then "VPV Connections" and choose the VPN connection you just set up, which is now listed above the "Configue VPN" text.

That should be it... it is pretty much the same for every VPN provider, if you can download the openvpn files from them.

Angelwolf No, I haven't because I assume I should give OpenVPN server address manually right?
but because the internet in my country heavily censored I couldn't find a server address, with the app it's automatic but with OpenVPN I don't know!

Mahyar from my understanding, ExpressVPN can provide you with config files for use with OpenVPN. You download them from the Express VPN website and set OpenVPN to use them.

I tried this without success, when I click on the "On" switch, it will go back to Off position instantly. I notice if I do the everything without putting the password, it will stay in the on position but it will not work, if I put the password it goes back to the off position if I try to put it on.
      Can anyone help me?

        Dean

        Try this:
        1) In you networkmanager applet choose "VPN Connections" > "Configure VPN".
        2) Choose the VPN connection you want to edit and click "Edit the selected connection".
        3) Under "VPN" click "Advanced".
        4) Under "Security" untick "Use custom size of cypher key:"
        5) Click "OK" then click "Save".

See if you are able to connect now...

Yes! It work, thank you very much.

One more question, when I was previously failing to connect, I accidentally click on "don't show this massage again" on the notification, I look for it in the settings, on the notification settings and couldn't find anything off. Is there a way to bring back the VPN notification?

Dean In Budgie & Gnome it should be under:

            Settings > Notifications > Network
            or
            Settings > Applications > Network

Cant see anything else related to a VPN connection notification.

I did checked on those two places, but couldn't find anything.

Dean What notification is it that is disabled now?

Have you tried to click on Network under Settings > Notifications > Network, there are some settings in there that can be disabled, even if it show Network notification to be "ON".

If that's not it, then i have no clue, sorry.

                • Dean replied to this.

Katoa Yes, I did checked in there, everything is as it's suppose to be.
Here is a screenshot of the error before I was able to successfully connect to the VPN, that's when I accidentally clicked "Don't show this message again".

Dean Found the solution while looking at the Solus 4.2 release, if you rightclick on the networkmanager applet, there is an option to enable or disable "Enable Notifications".

If "Enable Notifications" is enabled try disabling it first, then enable it again and it should work.

                      It worked! Thank you.

I tried it before disabling from Settings > Notification and didn't worked, but with your instructions did worked. Somehow it seems there's something different by doing it from the applet. Thanks.
