Personal feedback from listening (I posted this as a Youtube comment as well):
- About 5:20 - I'm gonna be honest, when I was coming up with all the marketing terms for talking about the DEs, I was having a hard time describing Plasma. I did end up going with the tinkering route because well, it has configuration options borderline overkill (IMO). If anyone has any better suggestions out there, I'm open to it. Because yea, it doesn't really describe Plasma all that well.
- About 8:28 - Yea, the applet icon for Raven isn't ideal. If anyone has a suggestions for a different one that isn't literally a bird (I've gotten that one before), I'm all ears. There really isn't an icon that best describes "notifications and all things widgets" though :\
- About 11:08 - Regarding search being at the top, yea the plan with the new Software Center is to have a search icon in the headerbar and have that bring you to a search view that you can toggle out / back out of.
- About 12:30 - Regarding Third Party, the mechanism for that is actually up on GitHub (https://github.com/getsolus/3rd-party) and we effectively fetch the source (say, GitKraken or Skype) from the vendor directly and re-compile it into an eopkg to install. We can't really check for updates against that since there is no centralized index (basically, list of packages with their version, source, etc.) for it, but with the new Software Center the old Third Party mechanism will largely go away for anything that has Flatpak or Snap support. Yea, it is also indeed really really slow. Like "is this even working?" slow. I agree regarding checking stuff by default for application updates. We originally slated the change for the 4.1 ISO against our existing Software Center, but it's been in need of more testing so we opted not to shoehorn it in.
- About 15:08 - Finally got flatpak updated with the GNOME 3.36 upgrade in the last few days actually. It was blocked by issues we were having with newer releases of geoclue that were only recently resolved in geoclue 2.5 series. I was really happy to get it updated.
And it's not going away! There are many of us, myself included, that could never imagine using anything else.
Overall I give this 10/10 Goldblums.
