I just got around to installing upgrades on the 3 Solus SSDs that I use in my dev workstation. Here are the results:

  • Plasma still doesn't make a sound, but handles the dual monitors perfectly.

  • Mate still can't handle the dual monitors after a login, but plays beautiful music.

  • Budgie still does everything well.

  • Plasma has no audio at all? Or just at login?
  • With regards to MATE what is the issue with dual monitors?

I've described these problems before. I thought they might have been fixed by these major upgrades.

Plasma has no audio, ever. I've tried with the music manager (Ellsa?) and with VMC. No system sounds, either.

Mate's monitor problems are harder to describe. Both monitors display the background during login, but after my password is accepted the right-hand monitor (VGA) goes black. The left-hand monitor (HDMI) works normally, thus I was able to start a terminal to do the upgrades.

When I started the displays setting dialog to verify the settings, and clicked [Apply], both screens turned black. The right-hand screen was pure black, while the left-hand monitor had a row of garbage at the top, and otherwise black. I could only exit by a hard shut-down.

Thankfully, the Budgie installation works perfectly, and always has, so I'm pretty sure my hardware is fine.

still haven't figured out why this is happening, as soon as I change the sound level by 1% everything works inside my vm

Thanks for your reply. I'll try that again today, although I no longer have a Solus VM. (This laptop does not run Windows anymore.) I'll let you know if it works on my workstation.

Girtablulu still haven't figured out why this is happening

The additional updates I installed on my Plasma SSD apparently fixed the sound problem. I don't have time right now to test it thoroughly, but I used VLC to access the music share on my NAS, and played a selection.

Do you have an opinion on why Mate can't handle my dual monitors, although Budgie and Plasma work fine in that respect? I swapped in the Mate SSD, installed the rest of the upgrades, and rebooted. Nothing changed. It's still troubled as I described in my above message.

Thanks for your help, by the way. We probably don't say that often enough.

EDIT: Please note that this remaining issue should be very low priority. It takes a lot of work to set up my dev workstation, and I have it working great with Budgie. It would be nice to have Mate and Plasma working on that machine, too, but definitely should not take the place of more important issues.
