Lately I've been looking at Pop_OS! (or however it's written). The new tiling functionality seems interesting, though one could probably also get that for Solus Gnome.

If not solus manjaro for sure. it was painful enough ditching manjaro.... but solus is too awesome and i love the uniqueness.

Staudey Yeah you can get it on Solus GNOME too, have tried it. It's good but a bit janky for somethings. I need to spend more time with it as it's probably a learning curve thing.

Probably Manjaro, because is Arch with less headache, or maybe fedora, used fedora many times before, I like it, but the upgrade gave me problems before, I don't like the idea of reinstalling the system without need, just because a new update arrived.
Actually I would say Arch, but nowadays no more, I have kids, wife and a job... no more linux solving prolems funtime.

Traitor here. I'm actually VM-ing Solus (please don't ban me 😅 ). Using Fedora full-time because of the newer packages that I need like postgresql 12 and nodejs 13/14.

Sent from Windows 10 because of reasons. Now I can die in shame

You know, you can always run Postgres through Docker.

And nodejs.... just use nvm or n, its a must for a node developer.

I'd use Solus. But that's because I'd continue it's development.

Justin but what if Solus never existed? I think that's the point of the poll.

I'd remain on MacOs (using a Macbook Air 2013 - A1466) if it wasn't for the Catalina update that broke most of my old apps including some obscure french dev utilities and WINE based apps. Especially since going back to Mojave is now almost impossible (I just don't have the patience for that anymore).

I would propably go for Opensuse Tumbleweed. Or if that would not be available back to Fedora (not Silverblue). I want to have a rolling release (and not to install/do a risky Upgrade every couple of months) without the bleeding edge (therefor i do not like Manjaro or Arch. Had them running a couple of years ago).
DE would always need to be Gnome. I got used to the good Touch device Support.

          15 days later

I am newbie to the use of Solus Budgie.
As long as I can't really find my way around and read the clock at Systray without glasses 😉 ,
I will continue to use as my main system:

          Calculate Linux (Gentoo).

I can't even conceive of the idea of using a different distro. My mind just can't wrap around the idea.

I really like the solus. It seems to me no distro did not achieve what the solus did. Probably smells of snobbery here. but this is my opinion. Perhaps the solus is the most promising distro. Sabayon gives good hopes but he is still far from solus

          6 months later

ArchLabs, the best of the Arch derivatives.

Alpine or Sabayon for me, as they have lasted the longest in use before Solus. I don't think I could go back to Ubuntu or Debian since I want more current packages.

          DE is far less certain.

I would have tried other Distros like Manjaro or Arch but then would have went back to Gentoo. I always tried other distros than Gentoo but always got back to Gentoo until I found Solus.

Last Jan 10th I commented that it would be hard to use another distro because Solus is just so good. I haven't changed my mind on that point, but after testing many distro's last year for fun on spare hard drives I think if it came down to it I would have to go with Ubuntu Mate or Kubuntu as alternatives. Although, I still rate Solus Plasma as the best implementation of KDE I have used so far and Solus Mate is better than Ubuntu Mate! Just hope that Solus keeps going from strength to strength then I won't have to worry about switching at all!

I might try Cloudready since Google took it in house. Maybe go back to Win7 🙁 but my old laptop seems very happy on Solus.

I used different distributions. Among them were Slackware, Zenwalk, Linux, Mandriva, Mint....NixOS, KDE Neon and finally Solus Gnome. This is a time period of more than 17 years. Now there is no longer any desire to conduct experiments, so most likely I will choose a distribution that requires the least time to configure and study, like Solus OS.

tumbleweed with btrfs snapshots enabled, ive been playing with it and keeping it up to date on another drive for almost 6 months now, without any issues. unlike manjaro which tends to break hard (at least it has for me) tw is super stable and there are never any issues. updates arrive 3-5 times per week. and should a problem arise you could just choose a previous snapshot on the grub menu, which i never had to do but tried it once just to check, and it worked like magic

disadvantage compared to solus is that its boots slower, but once loaded its very fast. im not sure what the issue with libreoffice being so slow on solus is, but on tw you'll miss the splash screen if you blink
also i think fonts arent quite as good as solus, + you need to use a 3rd party repo for codecs
it also has crap forums, you cant talk to the devs like you do here

but it would be my choice if solus for some reason wasnt an option any more

Arch Linux or any of its derivatives. I actually used Arch for the longest time until I decided it wasn't for me at the time. If I would use it again I would try something like Anarchy Linux or
Endeavour OS to get a fresh start.

Probably Fedora, although I like Arch better, it is more time consuming just to get things updated and working well.

So hard, after trying Solus, Manjaro does not feel quite as snappy or as polished - my primary pre-Solus driver, KDE version. I use to love #! One of the best things about Solus is that it is its own thing. If not Solus, I would likely go Pop! full time. They've refined Ubuntu and most vendors provide .deb packages. I'm at an age where I do not want to lose countless hours tinkering or finding the right driver.

Solus is crisp. Efficient. just works. I still think eopkg is faster than pacman and the "btw I use arch" is ridiculous.

Update: This holidays I have replaced Solus with openSUSE (with Budgie). And it was a great experience.

Pros: yast, openSUSE installer, 1-click package
Cons: zypper (significantly slower than eopkg, although more dependencies are written in c++), keyboard behavior (ctrl + shift doesn't work), YaST appearance

I honestly don't know what I'd do if Solus were discontinued.

Truth be told, I'd probably drop Linux if Solus were discontinued. I'm long-since retired and no longer have a work-related need to use Linux. I use Solus because I like it so much. Solus is fun to use, rock-solid, and the Solus team/community is great. Solus was designed to be a desktop environment, nothing more, and it is near perfect for that purpose.

So who knows? If Solus were discontinued, I might buy a Macbook Air laptop and learn the MacOS environment. Two of my sons have been nagging me about Apple for years and years, and I've never tried it. I like my iPhone, so I'd probably like MacOS, and if iOS is any indication, MacOS will be rock solid and easy on my geezer psyche.

Maybe I'll try Endeavour OS. But, I'll use Solus as long as possible.

I would move over to Gecko linux rolling release (Opensuse spin) and the LXQT variant.
Its fast running the absolute latest LQXT and pretty stable.
I looked at their take on budgie but its pretty bad besides nothing can compare to Solus and Budgie combined
          IMHO.

          5 days later

My laptop (w/Ryzen 4500u) has a hole on the SSD where Solus Plasma is going when 4.2 comes out. I REALLY hope it comes out soon. I mean REALLY. 🙂
          Manjaro Plasma
          KDE Neon
          Tumbleweed
          Clear Linux

After so more time using Linux as my main OS, I think I'd have to change my answers. Even though I have an adversion to Ubuntu based distros, I'd probably go with Elementary. It's the only thing that comes close in my opinion to the fit and finish, curation, and elegance of Solus.
