What's the best laptop for running Solus?

Thanks for the response. I think that the problem I'm experiencing with trying to install is that I'm not dual booting with Windows, I'm installing along side Zorin. I'm considering re-installing windows and then attempting another install. I had no problems installing Zorin, but both Arch and Solus return a Grub error screen when they are installed as the sole OS. I found trying to download grub2 to Zorin a night mare and gave up. I'll have a crack at a reset of Windows this week, update the bios and see what happens.

Personally, I stopped buying from the big boxes. Tuxedo, Starlabs, and System76 are just three examples of computer providers that focus 100% on linux. Lately, I've been buying System76 - in my home state - and LOVING it. Solus runs great - no tweaks or work around needed. Only 76 issue is with the Thelio - fan hums (ever so slightly) when running any OS other than Pop.

I hear that a lot. Certainly when the s145 dies or I can afford to get another laptop I'll be heading down that road.

Koa My ideapad is pretty bad, Solus was the only distro I found (without having to make a custom iso which is beyond my scope) that would allow me to install the OS on the actual hard drive thanks to the 5.13 kernel.

But what do I know, I'm still fairly new to linux so, haven't spent any time in forums.

I've got 2 Lenovo Ideapad 3's (the all AMD ones) and Solus Plasma works fantastic. Took all of about 6 minutes to install🙂

I've also ran Solus Plasma on a Dell Inspiron E1505, Vostro 1500, and Vostro 1510. The only issue with the oldest, (Vostro 1500) was the Broadcom chipset (yes DoFlicky does have most of the old Broadcom firmware, but not for this one.. I had to manually install on Mint and Pop as well). Rather than jack with manually installing I just used a new USB dongle that worked out of the box at about 10x the speed lol.

Just get latest Apple MacBrick Ultimate with no USB ports, no headphone jack, no display, no keyboard, nothing. Just beautiful brushed aluminium and shiny Apple logo.

Juankz I like the modular construction but I wouldn't go fancy. Old school thick laptops with non-chicklet keyboard, well designed cooling and hardware common enough to be easily installed on Linux are the best. I don't take my laptop everywhere like those Starbucks loonies.

Hello everyone 👋

I like to jump into this discussion with a question myself, regarding a new laptop. Its more like a general question but of course it is somewhat relevant for using it with Solus too.

I use thinkpads for a long time now and I am planning to get a x270 after my e480 has died in june. Now, there are multiple reasons why I make the switch back to the x-series and why x270. But this is not relevant for now.

Coming to my question: Since the x-series is having 12,5 inch screens, I struggle to decide wheather I should go for the FHD or the HD (but IPS) option. I dont like to use dpi scaling and it took me a long time to get used to the 1080p resolution on my e480 14 inch screen. I would say, it was pushing my comfort zone regarding text size and visability. Stuff was nice looking and crisp but man it was small. Going with 1366x768 might be better for a 12,5 inch screen?! I can imagine, that unscaled 1080p on 12,5 inch must be extraordinary tiny 😄

Also, I am not so sure if those advertisements saying "IPS HD 1366x768 display" are true. All I knew are the options HD TN panel, FHD IPS non-touch and FHD IPS touch. Is there really a HD IPS variant within the x270 series?

Would you still opt for a FHD display on a 12,5 inch or (if true) rather get the HD IPS panel? Any issues regarding dpi scaling you came across, if that might be necessary later for me (hopefully not). Does scaling create issues with external monitors? 🤔

Thx for any helping comments and any education on this topic. Maybe there are interesting articles worth readin?!

Sheesh. 2005 computers? I'm keeping my T420 because it was the last with a decent keyboard but even that was a 2011 Lenovo.

BTW have an X1 carbon Gen 8 and you will have to install the sound drivers from Github. I also rarely use the touchscreen or that annoying thing at the bottom of the keyboard so I don't know if some of the more sophisticated stuff works - like "gestures" whatever those are 🙂
