Koa I haven't found this to be the case. I'm currently using an S145-15API and have no problems running Solus. I've also ran Lubuntu, Elementary, Arco, Garuda, KDE Neon, and another LXDE distro I can't remember on it. The only one I had issues with was Fedora.
There are issues with dual booting Windows, but I've found this is more tied to UEFI and is hardware and somewhat distro agnostic. I get around that by having a separate SATA SSD just for Windows installed in the laptop.
That said, the S145 line has other problems. The battery life is generally atrocious, they're under powered for Windows, and I hate that there's no USB-C on them. But for a sub $500 laptop, these are trade-offs that can be expected and things I knew about before I purchased it. The differences in performance, upgradability, and daily use can be quite dractic when comparing a $450 laptop to one that runs around the $1,450 mark like a ThinkPad T14. Some minor upgrades and moving to Linux as the main OS, and it's a very livable machine for those who are budget conscious. With 12gb of RAM on Solus, with all of my day-to-day work and some gaming, the machine almost never bogs down and I barely see resource usage above the 50-60% mark. Windows idles at the 40-50% mark and gaming just isn't an option.
