  • Suggestion: toolbar/dockbar setup saver & changer

I just came to Solus (Budgie) and I'm loving the experience. And I have a little suggestion. Perhaps someone said something like this before (could not find that searching the forum tough), but anyway.
After I took a look at the toolbar settings, I figured out a way to have a standard toolbar (at the top) and a Plank-like dock at the bottom, ahem, kind-of-Cupertino-like, instead of the default, ahem again, kind-of-Redmond-like setup (I just posted a screenshot at the proper thread before). These posibilities give the user, as I suppose is intended, plenty of different potential setups. Xfce since 4.14 at least, and Mate both have options to change toolbar/dock setups so you can more or less mimic another desktop enviroments via an app with preconfigured options. You can even save your actual setup, so you can change it and go back whenever you want that. And, would that not be nice here, in Solus Budgie? I hope I'm not missing any app or settings option available elsewhere that does just that, in which case I would thank you if you point me there. If that still doesn't exists, well, as I said, is just a suggestion for a possible future development. No hurries tough; Solus Budgie is, I believe so, great as it is now, and the devs efforts are very much appreciated. 🙂

alf i guess you can do this way... i never done it but you can give a try...

save/export your gssettings from root level .. when ever you want to reset then you can load/set it....

viyoriya That is something I should try just because I like to tweak & learn, but before doing that I thing it'll be perhaps a little harder than manually change tool/dockbars again; to be fair, that is kind of easy & fast. I'm just thinking in a newbie user way, the easier things are done, the better. But you gave me a clue to investigate things further, so as I said, I'll try. Thank you very much! 🙂

I certainly agree that there should be the ability to easily import, export, and swap between different Budgie profiles / configurations. This is something I intend on doing for Budgie 11 (and likely moving to a file-based configuration setup, but we'll have to see) for some preset functionality I plan on implementing.

Until then, dumping gsettings is the best option. You can do this for Budgie and it'll dump budgie-desktop settings, but since we write to org.gnome.desktop and a multitude of other schema paths, your backup will not be comprehensive. I would take a look into using dconf dump and dconf load, however I cannot guarantee that you'll have a flawless backup / restore process by doing so, so buyers beware. Should you bork your budgie configuration, you can reset by following https://getsol.us/articles/budgie/restoring-panel-defaults/en/

JoshStrobl That's nice to read, I look forward to see how you improve Budgie even better than it is now. I'm in for file-based (aka dotfiles) configurations myself, but you are the dev and you will know the better way to do that. Based on what I've seen so far, I've got plenty of faith in your choices.
Next week I hope I'll have some free time again, and I will try what you suggest, if I'm able to. I hope to give some feedback then.
Thank you very much again for giving us this great distro & DE. 🙂

JoshStrobl Here again. Finally I tried just now what you suggested. I don't really know if I've done really OK, but anyway, here's what I did, and this is what happened:
First, I gave Solus Budgie an "out of the box" appearance. And:
        dconf dump /
        The output was:
        Made my backup:
        dconf dump / > dconf-backup.txt
Then I changed the widget theme, icon theme & background. Moved the bottom toolbar to the left, an added a second toolbar to the top. And restored with:
        dconf load / < dconf-backup.txt
And... The widget theme, icon theme & background turned back to the ones before the changes, but the original toolbar is still at the left (didn't came back to the original bottom), and the freshly added top toolbar is still there. So, as suggested, I did a
        budgie-panel --reset --replace &
Plus Ctrl+d, and back to the original toolbar. So I'd say it's a partial success; basic theming can be saved & restored, but what was my original point, toolbar settings, were unaffected. Perhaps I need a better command-fu. 🙂 Anyway, I did this just for fun and providing some feedback. As I said before, I'll wait for your excellent work on this. Not in a rush, again, I'm enjoying Solus Budgie as it is now. 😃
