I finally did join this century and ripped all my plastic disks to digital on Solus. Now I have to move it all externally.
I filled a commerical trash barrel with jewel cases and back cover art...
OK I auditioned and uninstalled:
Beets--to big a learning curve
Audacious--did not do anything for me in any way
Guyadeque--gorgeous but not intuitive for my animal-like brain
Gnome-Music: see Audacious

Kept Strawberry. Really like it. Just right.

I liked to use DeadBeef, because it's something like Foobar on Windoze, but now I use Clementine. It looks a little crappy, but has tons of preloaded streaming services content to discover some music like SomaFM stations or Magnatune. It has an useless and weird stuff like mood bars and Nyan Cat spectrum analyzer. 🤣

Mainly installed Audacious because it allowed me to easily play SNES chiptunes, and now I'm sticking to it 😄

Staudey And what is the snes music format? They are not chiptunes but more like protracker mods on Amiga. Chiptunes dont use samples but fm synth stuff. Chiptune's are rather from 8-bit computer and consoles except emulated stuff like AHX on the Amiga. Of course it was possible to make chiptunes on Protracker with some tricks. I have a collection of Amiga .mod and .ahx files I like to listen to.

Well, I don't know the exact definition of chiptunes, so you may be right.

I'd say chiptune is programmatic music that targets a specific sound chip 🙂 Amiga used the Paula chip which used four channels of samples, so that counts in my book. also, not all chiptune is FM - many of the 8-bit games consoles used "programmable sound generators" which had maybe 3 or 4 channels of raw waveforms (triangle, square/pulse, saw, noise). the C64 chip even had fancy things like an analogue filter and ring modulation!

(to bring this on topic, I'm using Deadbeef or sometimes cmus for my chiptunes!)

Has nobody mentioned Elisa? I have to admit I haven't gone back 2 1/2 years to read all these posts, but I haven't seen it mentioned in recent times. I'm currently listening to Pirates of Penzance by D'Orly Carte, and it sounds great.

When I launched it on my media computer, it took only a few minutes to import 5,000 or so tracks from my NAS. It has a great UI, and is intuitive to use. And it's a default application for Solus (on Plasma, anyway).

For playing a single track or album, VLC is pretty hard to beat, too.

One thing stood in the way from me trying out Elisa: Baloo. Baloo and my Budgies have never played nice. Ever.

WetGeek It's the KDE indexer that's bundled into Elisa, or at least installs with Elisa. You already have it if you have Dolphin.

Ah ... it is so. Dolphin is indeed the file manager here. You're saying it doesn't go well with Budgie?

I just recommended that my granddaughter give Elisa a go, and she's currently using Budgie. Did you ever find out what the problem was?

WetGeek No. For every install of Budgie I've had, and if I installed an app with Baloo in it...Baloo would declare itself the default indexer and obsessively index every byte on the os every second. It choked up the CPU so bad I could never get work done let alone move the mouse. System monitor would show it sucking up 90% of resources. Hard boot and thensudo eopkg rm whateverpackage.

I must be living the sheltered life. Baloo installs have plagued me for years, but I'm the only one it targets🙂 (I never see any posts about Baloo on Budgie). So your grand-daughter has a great chance of success.

It looks like she'll be okay. I have a Budgie VM on this laptop, and I installed Elise and tested it there. I didn't test it extensively, but everything seemed to be okay. Maybe recent upgrades have fixed the problem?

When I mention my granddaughter, it may sound like she's a child, but in fact, she graduated from Western Washington University, built her own desktop from parts, and runs Budgie on it.

I'm sure. Or nieces you carried around on your shoulders as children that got their drivers licenses in the blink of an eye.
Good for her. She can build her own rig and a WWU grad--that's a historic university like NAU for the western US. Sounds like her own person. Have family on Whidbey and I turned down a job recently near Gray's Harbor because it had to be now and I could not do now. What a unique area.

Thrice bitten here...haven't experimented with kde apps (w/baloo) for several months. Likely you are correct and it's fixed.

Musicolet. A really good lightweight music player that can play all of your audio files. It cannot retrieve anything from the internet nor can it stream or download, making this player not littered with ads. It takes a very minimum amount of space, though it does include a lot. It is free software, which makes it a big bonus.
