x2go server was in the repo but got removed from it in the end of year clean up and marked as obsolete, the reason behind it I don't know

VNC is in the repo and works well enough.

Among other things, VNC doesn't support audio; so at best it's only a partial replacement for when an X2Go connection is needed

I'm not sure you're right about that. I have hundreds of music CDs (mostly classical) on my NAS, and I routinely play those using VNC. What kinds of audio inputs are you unable to play?

The last time I tried, system sounds would not cross the network neither did media players. Setting up Pulse Audio over ssh to work for Windows clients was… time consuming and too technical for my end users.
X2Go was the solution that worked and worked in a mixed environment across Linux, Win, or Mac.

Wait ... I just realized that we're talking about two different things. I answered your post late in the day, and when I saw VNC as something that wouldn't support audio, I read it as VLC, (from VideoLan) This morning, after some sleep, VNC looked a bit strange to me, so I finally realized we weren't talking about the same thing. VLC is indeed a competent media player, but it's not for remote access.

That thread was dormant for a couple years, and I just noticed the latest posts that were added to it. Sorry if I confused anyone.
