I just installed a VM of Solus from the latest ISO (just downloaded). There seems to be a horrible black theme as the default, and so far, and I haven't found any way to change it. Can anyone save me some time and tell me how? Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
Awful black theme

WetGeek Themes are changed in "Budgie Desktop Settings"
I don't recall what is installed by default, you may want to install other themes. Try searching for "theme" in the Software Center to see what is available.
davidjharder Thanks! Now I remember that from the last time I tried Solus. I install it now and then to ckeck on progress. Updated about 278 packages this time - that's how long it's been. It looks far better now.

Totally agree, the default theme is really bad.
But it's easy to change.... so all good =)
Yes, the theme is easy enough to change. I don't understand why some distros have default black/dark themes at first boot. Of course, you're not stuck with it but it seems an odd decision. At least to me.
Eggnog I don't understand why some distros have default black/dark themes at first boot.
Because some of us prefer it and think it complements Budgie well? Especially Raven.
Eggnog Well, I don't understand why some distros have default light themes at first boot. It's most illogical to waste the white light on empty space and strain eyes.
Eggnog And I don't understand why all distro should have a light theme by default... Let's kill diversity and all have the same!
And choosing a dark theme is not only a matter of taste, I do work the whole day in front of screens, and I can tell you that at the end of the day, my eyes are much lesser tired when I use dark themes; I also noticed on my phone (AMOLED screen), the impact on the autonomy is noticeable, when I switch to dark themes wherever I can which is welcome.
The real problem is that dark themes are still poorly integrated/supported and that some dark theme designers don't think enough about people who have poor quality screens (hear most laptop screens) and don't play enough with contrasts to make them comfortable to use.
But that got nothing to do with defaulting a theme. Personally I'm very glad Solus set a dark theme by default with version 4. Of course tastes are personal, but Solus 4 MATE is the best looking out of the box MATE desktop I have ever seen !
Are you all talking about plata? It looked a bit "too black" to me when i installed it on Mate compared to Arc dark theme, but now i love it. It is extremely solid, modern and beautiful theme. Now i am trying Budgie and it looks incredible out of the box. Everyone's taste is different but i think it's a very commendable choice of theme for Solus.
The default dark theme is the #1 reason I noticed Budgie, decided to look at Solus and ultimately switch.
JohannPopper I see what you did there
And, as I said, themes are easy enough to change so everyone wins.
I love plata-noir (compact for me)
Can't stand bright UI's myself. I don't need my retina's nuked every time I open file manager.
Themes can be changed.
